Comment Fallacious Title (Score 1) 987

I am not one usually to complain about titles or editors or any of the other Slashdot memes, but this title is a crock of shit. How misleading can it get? Not only did he not post Assange's bail, he didn't even offer the full amount!

Given the importance of the headline in advertising the story, I find it a piss poor and inane choice.

My two cents.

Murdoch's UK Paywall a Miserable Failure 428

David Gerard writes "As part of his war against free, Rupert Murdoch put the Times and Sunday Times of London behind a paywall. Michael Wolff of Newser asks how that's working out for him. You can guess: miserable failure: 'Not only is nobody subscribing to the website, but subscribers to the paper itself — who have free access to the site — are not going beyond the registration page. It's an empty world.' Not that this wasn't entirely predictable." Update: 07/17 01:41 GMT by T : Frequent contributor Peter Wayner writes skeptically that the Newsday numbers should be looked at with a grain of salt: "I believe they were charging $30/month for the electronic edition and $25/month for the dead tree edition which also offered free access to the electronic edition. In essence, you had to pay an extra $5 to avoid getting your lawn littered with paper. The dead tree edition gets much better ad rates and so it is worth pushing. It's a mistake to see the raw numbers and assume that the paywall failed."

BP Claims Gulf Well Has Been Stopped 601

An anonymous reader writes with word that BP has announced the Gulf oil spill has been stopped. Another reader adds more detail: "The last valve on the new cap has been closed, and the flow of oil and gas into the sea has stopped. That doesn't mean it's over. It is unclear whether the steel casing deep in the well can contain the pressure. The risk is that it could burst, which would eventually cause a rupture on the sea floor that would make things much messier to deal with. However, they're monitoring the pressure buildup carefully and if the pressure holds over the next 48 hours (indicating there is no leak below the sea floor), they'll assess what to do next. If it doesn't hold at the expected readings, then they'll re-attach the pipe used for producing to the surface and start collecting again. Regardless of what happens the relief well still has to be completed to permanently plug the well with cement, which could take a couple more weeks."

Used a standard, fake email address when I submitted my complaint. Though I just as easily could have used one of my inactive accounts.

Maybe that makes my complaint less valid in their eyes, but it helps avoid situations like this for me whilst still allowing me to at least (have the illusion of?) have my voice heard.

They are doing that for anyone who posts on the forum. Supposedly community MVPs are not happy about it and even some Blues who have used their names have had their personal details leaked onto pages in minutes thanks to 4chan. This is a debacle for Blizzard and their banhammers will be busy long into the night.

I know you're probably just trying to be funny, but this is pretty serious. I can't imagine many will stick around after this change is implemented and given that fact the official community won't be around all that much longer. Of course there are trolls but to attempt to get rid of them by throwing the "baby out with the bathwater" so to speak, is a far worse idea.

It's a horrible idea. Anyone with some basic Google searching skills can uncover a lot about people based on (presumably) their real name. For people such as myself with a name that is not so unique, it is not a huge issue. But for a lot of people who might have more uncommon names, such information can easily be used to find addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, social networking accounts, and other information. This is an identity theft and privacy nightmare. And given the ages and types of people who can play the game, I see it being very successfully exploited.

Comment Activision? (Score 0) 833

I must ask this to anyone who really knows what is going on with Real ID and the Battle.net system (in addition to Blizzard politics). How much influence does Activision truly have over Blizzard's day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives? Is the eerily 1984-esque move to Real ID and the Battle.net system in more and more areas a product of the fated acquisition or is it something that Blizzard has implemented after getting more out of touch with reality? At first I didn't mind Battle.net or even the Real ID system as using your account name was optional, but now they are expanding it (presumably to combat trolls or dissenters and to better foster "camaraderie") to their forums. How long until they start implementing it in their game world? This is like the Facebook debacle all over again, only without many options. I am hopeful Blizzard will reevaluate this policy as it is not popular and definitively not a good idea from a privacy standpoint. The more coverage it gets, the more of a chance there is to see it scrapped. Especially now that there are other forums where WoW-related stuff can be discussed. Mass exodus from Blizzard forums ahead? Either way, I still wonder if this whole Battle.net and Real ID system is Activision's fault.
