Comment Haha (Score 1) 306

This is almost funny. You know, the gas and all. Whatever. Anyway, what other gasses do we have to do the same job(s)? I would think this might not go to well with the people who use it, given how common and likely (comparatively) inexpensive it is.

Comment The problem of Evidence (Score 1) 1164

There is at least one piece of "evidence" for ID belief in nearly every aspect of science. But at the same time there is a non-ID piece of "evidence" that goes against it. For instance, those of ID often believe that a "Spirit" is involved in people or things that (at the same time) gives freedom of choice, and from it the ability to reason, so on... The people who believe something other than ID, or even those in ID who do not believe in having a "Spirit" would argue that there is no free choice or "reason," per say, but that the random or non-random (as in caused by something "in the world") path of electricity through brain neurons causes people to do the things they do. The "Spirit" group might say that the "Spirit" causes the non-random actions, but since the non-"Spirit" group denies the existence of such, and as at this point "Spirits" cannot be proven or disproven, the argument should halt until further evidence is revealed. However, the argument continues even though no new evidence has been shown. Also, even when new evidence is shown disproving "Spirits," one of the "Spirit" group might argue that the "Spirit" is or is caused by a god or God (god meaning one of many, God meaning one). Since this is fundamental to the argument in the first place, the whole thing boils down to a "faith" based belief, for both parties. *I am not yet out of high school, and so have not been exposed to the doctrines of Christian, Evolutionist, ID, Muslim... or other college.

Solar-Powered Moon Rover To Explore Apollo Landing 151

Mike writes "Carnegie Mellon roboticist Dr. William Whittaker has teamed up with Astrobiotic Technology to develop a solar powered moon rover that will explore the Apollo landing site in 2011. The photovoltaic clad robot features two electric motors in the hub of each wheel, and a half cone of solar generators up top that will power the wheels, run computers, and beam stereo HD video back to earth. The project has been entered in the $25 million Google Lunar X Prize competition."

Submission + - The challenges for open source in China (goodgearguide.com.au)

angry tapir writes: "The uphill battle that open-source programs face to steal ground from proprietary software comes with added pitfalls in China, where problems like software piracy take away strengths that open source has elsewhere. The Chinese government backs multiple domestic open-source projects, but their software is not widely used. Low awareness, a lack of big open-source projects and difficulty finding expertise in certain programming languages all hamper the development of open source in China."

Submission + - Another Microsoft Update Update (technet.com)

harryjohnston writes: "The Microsoft Update Product Team have announced (via their Microsoft Update Product Team Blog that the Automatic Updates client code will be updated at the beginning of next month.

Because of limitations in the client software, this update will be automatically installed unless Automatic Updates is disabled completely, ignoring settings like "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them".

In my own opinion such an update is unlikely to cause any harm, but many have disagreed in the past. Full disclosure: I have been awarded as a Microsoft MVP. Let the bashing commence!"

Submission + - Apple demanded MS to stop its Laptop Hunters ads

An anonymous reader writes: Kevin Turner, Microsoft's Chief Operating Officer, told partners during his Worldwide Partner Conference keynote not only about the upcoming Microsoft Stores this fall that will be beside Apple stores but also about how Apple's lawyers wanted Microsoft to take down their Laptop Hunter ads. Here's the story he told (keep in mind that it's coming from a Microsoft executive): 'And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business.'

Submission + - The Pirate Bay Going Legal

Bangmaker writes: "The Pirate Bay is going legal in August, as told in an article in Techdirt and on the official Pirate Bay Blog. "The Pirate Bay has apparently been sold to a public company for 60 million SEK (about $8 million US) — at least according to a press release from the supposed buyer, Global Gaming Factory X (GGF). Apparently it's 30 million SEK/$4 million in cash and another the rest in shares in GGF. The company claims the acquisition will be complete in August, and that it will "launch new business models that allow compensation to the content providers and copyright owners.Apparently GGF operates internet cafes and gaming centers in Sweden, and also offers software for managing internet cafes as well. I assume more details will be forthcoming soon, but this raises a variety of questions — in part about the ongoing lawsuit and the lingering jailterms for the four people who were on trial. ""

Comment A Suggestion (Score 5, Informative) 152

Personally I think google can either epically win or fail with this move. One thing I see as very important is making sure not all of the phones are smartphones. The article suggests that several service providers will be in on the deal (already a step above apple in my opinion), however, if every phone delivered is a smartphone, much of the market will be lost. Not everyone can afford the expenses of internet and email that come with a smartphone. I would get the phone simply because it was running Andriod even if it weren't a smartphone.

Submission + - "New weapon" turns fire ants into headless (yahoo.com)

An anonymous reader writes: (From the head crabs dept.) Researchers in Texas are trying an unusual approach to combat fire ants — deploying parasitic flies that turn the pesky and economically costly insects into zombies whose heads fall off... The flies lay eggs on the fire ants, and the eggs hatch into maggots inside the ant and eat away at the pest's tiny brain. The ant will get up and wander for about two weeks while the maggot feeds, said Rob Plowes, a research associate at the University of Texas at Austin. "There is no brain left in the ant, and the ant just starts wandering aimlessly," he said. About a month after the egg is laid, the ant's head falls off — and a new fly emerges ready to attack another fire ant.
