Vegetarians are more inclined to watch what they eat. People in the omnivorous-diet category are all across the board. So you can't really draw a conclusion comparing one small group that most people watch their diet to another huge group where most people don't watch their diet and draw the conclusion that being vegetarian is "healthier". You can be healthy eating a vegetarian or an omnivorous diet; you just have to eat a balanced diet and not load up on fast-food and junk food! (Vegan diet though? A diet where one cannot even get their required nutrients from the food they eat is not "healthy"!) I eat an omnivorous diet and I'd venture to say I'm probably healthier and eat better than most vegetarians.

Scientists Cut Greenland Ice Loss Estimate By Half 414

bonch writes "A new study on Greenland's and West Antarctica's rate of ice loss halves the estimate of ice loss. Published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the study takes into account a rebounding of the Earth's crust called glacial isostatic adjustment, a continuing rise of the crust after being smashed under the weight of the Ice Age. 'We have concluded that the Greenland and West Antarctica ice caps are melting at approximately half the speed originally predicted,' said researcher Bert Vermeeersen."

Big Brother In the School Cafeteria? 425

AustinSlacker writes "An Iowa school district's lunch program asks children as young as 5 years old to memorize a four-digit PIN code so it can monitor what they eat in the school cafeteria - prompting some parents to claim it's an unhealthy case of 'Big Brother.' An over reaction by parents or an unnecessary invasion of privacy?"

Anti-Product Placement For Negative Branding 130

An anonymous reader writes "Product placement to promote your brand just isn't enough any more. These days, apparently, some companies are resorting to anti-product placement in order to get competitors' products in the hands of 'anti-stars.' The key example being Snooki from Jersey Shore, who supposedly is being sent handbags by companies... but the bags being sent are of competitors' handbags as a way to avoid Snooki carrying their own handbag, and thus potentially damaging their brand."

And the amount of juice we ("we" being Americans, especially kids) drink has greatly increased. When I was a kid, if we did have juice with breakfast, it was one of those little juice glasses a little bit bigger than a shot-glass, probably about 3 oz. Now people go to McDonalds for breakfast and get 16, 20, or 32 oz cups of orange juice and don't think twice about it.

According to BMI, I could gain nearly 50 pounds and still be "normal weight". (50 extra pounds on my 115 pound frame? HA! No way!)

In my non-medical viewpoint... Maybe I'm superficial, but to me it seems like "normal" for the woman's side is a bit chunky, while "normal" on the men's side is a bit too thin.

It's easy to not have student loans when mommy and daddy pay the bill.

My parents didn't have the money to put me through college. I got scholarships, I worked, and I still needed student loans to be able to afford college. (And no, I didn't live extravagantly, I lived on ramen noodles, mac & cheese, etc., typical college kid food. And had a cheap apartment with roommates.)

There are many kids out there that are not lazy or stupid that need student loans to be able to go to college.

I only counted full-time jobs, which I'm on my 2nd one (26 years old, graduated college in 2006).

I've worked numerous part-time jobs in high school and college (from waitress to dance teacher to retail sales), but I don't really consider those "real jobs".
I frequently had to watch what I said at my part time jobs because of that. I'd catch myself about to say something about getting a "real job" after college, but then I realized that to a lot of people, those are their "real jobs".

I had to laugh when I bought a plastic container at the petstore to store dogfood in a few weeks ago. It claimed on the tag that "dogs can't smell what's inside!".... does that mean if you want to hide your drugs, you just buy a plastic dog food container for $20? (Bit of false advertising there, I'd say!)
