I believe that was very very much the case when I entered college a few years ago... but once I hit the job market it was more like %70 .Net and the rest were a mix with Java holding a big chunk of the remainder at the top and Python rising in usage.

I like to keep my options open though... and Java is the clear choice for a multiplatform language. I live within driving distance of a banking center and a few research areas as well as the automotive industry so its not like I didn't have a selection. Obviously you get more options if you have more experience than just a college degree. But other options were limited to replacing people that have left companies/gotten hit by buses etc.. I really don't see java being in the growth part of the equation at best Oracle is squeezing the life out of it bit by bit.

Of course! Research going on in these areas is great and hopefully these sorts of tests become more bearable for women however.

Also I wonder whatever happed to terrahertz scanners that were all the rage a few years back among researchers? They were supposed to be the holy grail of imaging etc.. supposedly as good as an MRI + CAT scan. Apparently these are used in airports... but you just don't hear a whole lot about the tech like a few years ago....

I ran ROS on a Pandaboard running Gentoo/Linux ARM just fine over 2 years ago... the main problem was the pandaboard lacked the processing oomp for alot of things. We were looking at doing 3d SLAM but the fact is I am not sure even the latest ARM boards are up to that... in the end we scalled back our goals to more resonalbe levels. This just makes it officially supported there isn't much effort involved other than possibly actively getting more packages working as my testing was limited to most base packages and not some of the more exotic ones.<br><br>Android isn't really appropriate for robots... sure it will work but you'd be better off with Linux IMO, Android focuses on Dalvik/ART whereas Linux supports C/++ Python and Lisp natively which is what ROS runs on, and if you want an interface just write one in QT or Mono/Winforms etc.... since both are cross platform.<br><br>I think one thing that would make using ROS alot easier is a tool to develop robot models graphically... as far as can tell they still require that you write the joint transforms manually which is quite hard to get right.

Yeah,I agree... But at the same time also think that the things that may the USA truly great may still stand a chance. I mean the things you list are side effects of "America" .. the freedom and liberty enjoyed for the last 15-20 coon ages is what has made the country great. Sure we have our rough spots but people eventually come around and remember what being American is all about.... adversity fosters it!

The "superiority" of X86 had nothing to do with the demise/back burnering of other architectures.

Just about every processor arch has been maimed by confrontation on a marketing front... Alpha, Sparc, Power, Arm.... the ones that have survived have regulated themselves to niche markets (in the case of ARM a really really big niche) so they don't have to do battle with Intel and AMDs marketing and established user base.

I don't know about the rest but Sparc has backward compatibility that rivals Intel's as well as good performance.

Apparently I'm part of the 2% .... :/ some people have pointed out rebublic cellular to me as well but the gottcha there is that you have to use a provided phone and you can't tether at all ever.

I learned this the hardware on a trip to Brazil... I think texts were 25 cent each and like $2 a min calling or something like that. That said T-mobile is the one of the best value plans around... and I have noticed the HSPA coverage is improving in my area (Charlotte/Gastonia,NC).

It is a Linux Handheld... if it runs on Arm Linux you can run it on this.

A friend of mine has one.. and it seems to perform decently. The biggest thing is the controllers which make it a clear winner over a phone for gaming. There are native games as well as emulators. You can also run chat programs etc.. nearly anything you could run on a desktop with 512Mb ram.
