Oh cry me a river. You Americans always seem to be whining about high gas prices.
Currently you pay around 3.23700 U.S. dollars = 2.4172952 Euros per gallon 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters.

So that's around 60 cents per liter. Come back when the gas price is over 8 USD /gallon like it is in large parts of Europe or around 1.60 euro/liter.
We Europeans have no sympathy what so ever for you suffering from "high" gas prices.

The quality of Slashdot articles and what they cover is really going down hill. The only reason this article got here must have been because the SKA uses the name "TheSkyNet project". Short response, WE DON'T CARE! We've had SETI since 1999. Not to mention that there's more "important" stuff to spend the computing power on such as Folding@Home.

"How would you rate the ease and cost of immigration to industrialized countries in mainland Europe for a U.S. citizen who isn't yet fluent in a language other than English but is willing to learn?" This is quite off topic but I'd say it's pretty easy to go to any country north of France where they actually speak anything but the local language (yeap i'm stereotyping here). In Finland where i come from we have quite a few international companies with english as the working language. I guess that goes for all major international companies in Europe. So if you got skills wanted for a position at a company in Europe i wouldn't say there'd be any problem migrating :)
