I'll agree that the majority of people lack well developed critical thinking and reasoning skills, but I do wonder why you equate "being more concerned with your own well being and daily issues [than with some nebulously defined future state]" with a lack of critical thought? All things being equal, I wish our species as a whole nothing but the best now, and tomorrow, but if you tell me that, say, putting a bullet in my head right now is going to make the world a better place for "future generations," my well developed critical thinking skills are most certainly going to be more concerned with my own well being.

I didn't think to mention it in my previous post, but a dual-socket AMD Opteron 63xx system might be a reasonable alternative. Opterons appear to be significantly cheaper than Xeons (and in some cases, cheaper than I7s), to the point that you could get a 16-24 core AMD system for close to the same price as a high-end i7 (let alone a Xeon). I have no idea which would win on the benchmarks, though.

By the way, what sort of open-source GIS tools do you use? I occasionally find myself wanting to do GIS-related stuff, but I don't know where to start.

* Except maybe for the shrunken human passengers part, but in the near future, remote "virtual" control operators may play similar roles the way military drone operators do now. They may end up having to make quick decisions in difficult circumstances in terms of the patient's life and say limitations of batteries etc. on potentially patient-customized probe(s).
