The blame for this is on certain browser developers (*cough* MS *cough*). There is no technical reason why "amazon" couldn't be a host, but IE stupidly assumes that when you enter a single word, you want to search for it. It won't even resolve local domains. When I use IE I can't type in just "sharepoint" like I should be able to. Instead I have to type "sharepoint.company.com".

I'm talking about the Metro UI itself. It's meant to be an intuitive UI yet is exactly the opposite and requires knowledge of hidden buttons and gestures. Take Metro IE for example. Normally, it's pretty easy to navigate to an arbitrary URL. You can press Ctrl+L or click in the address bar, then type the URL. Now go try to do that on Metro IE.

My assessment of the dev preview is pretty bad. I was doing some consulting for a company, and we had installed windows 8 on a PC there. Me, the IT admin, and another guy who was fairly tech-literate couldn't figure it out due to the unintuititve UI that ends up getting in the way. They have plenty of good ideas that are just poorly implemented.

"Retarded" and any similar words just go through an endless cycle. Some new politically correct word will come along (like "intellectually disabled" as you said) and in a few years' time it will start being used as an insult. When they realize this, they'll come up with a new word and the exact same thing will happen.

The "getting things others already had" is part of why it's becoming worse. They're trying way to hard to copy chrome. If I wanted to use a browser like chrome, I would just use chrome. Mozilla has taken the google route and dumbed down their UI to the point where I refuse to upgrade past 3.6 because I don't want to have to install 80 addons just to get the UI back to where it should be.

An anonymous reader writes "In the last two years, over 200 million Indian nationals have had their fingerprints and photographs taken and irises scanned, and given a unique 12-digit number that should identify them everywhere and to everyone. This is only the beginning, and the goal is to do the same with the entire population (1.2 billion), so that poorer Indians can finally prove their existence and identity when needed for getting documents, getting help from the government, and opening bank and other accounts. This immense task needs a database that can contain over 12 billion fingerprints, 1.2 billion photographs, and 2.4 billion iris scans, can be queried from diverse devices connected to the Internet, and can return accurate results in an extremely short time."

The real question isn't "are we breaking the law?" it's "should we report it". Even if it is illegal, reporting it could cause you to get in more trouble than if you pretended you never knew. I'm not sure what differences there are between businesses and individuals with respect to child porn, but some people have accidentally downloaded it, reported it, and gotten arrested for it.
