We used to have a receptionist who put so much crap on her PC

Damn, that receptionist must have been seriously hot

Yeah, he was.

:-)

Apart from that, female sysadmins (or company owners) do exist...

Yeah, they do exist, but women are less susceptible to hormones, so it's more likely that if the receptionist were a male, the sysadmins (or company owners) would be gay.

Submission + - Europe to abolish geo-blocking and other copyright restrictions

AmiMoJo writes: The European Commission adopted a new Digital Single Market Strategy today, which aims to improve consumer access to digital services and goods. Among other things, Europe vows to end geo-blocking, which it describes as “a discriminatory practice used for commercial reasons”, and lift other unwarranted copyright restrictions. Consumers will have the right to access content they purchased at home in other European countries. “I want to see every consumer getting the best deals and every business accessing the widest market – wherever they are in Europe,” Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says.

Submission + - Mysterious radio signals that baffled astronomers came from a microwave (bgr.com)

An anonymous reader writes: For years now, astronomers who operate the famed Parkes Observatory Radio Telescope in South Wales, Australia were baffled by the mysterious bouts of unfamiliar radio signals they encountered about once or twice a year.

Originally detected in 1998, astronomers weren’t quite sure what to make of the signal interference, with some assuming it must be related to lightning and still others, presumably, left wondering if there were some intergalactic signals being relayed from deep space. In fact, the entire phenomenon was the subject of a feature story in Astronomy Now magazine this past January.

But as it turns out, the mysterious signals were actually coming from a nearby microwave near the telescope.

The toxic part of the myth is not that how much of a rock star or a ninja the professional programmers are. It's about how people who can code are viewed by their peers who can't code. I am not a programmer, but I have written some programs in bashscript, and I show the code to anyone, most will think that I have the "gift", the "neck", or that my ability has something to do with the fact that I have been accept into Mensa.

Submission + - Apple partners with IBM and Japan Post to support ageing populations (thestack.com)

An anonymous reader writes: IBM and Apple have joined in a partnership today to address Japan’s growing population of senior citizens. Apple CEO Tim Cook and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty announced the collaborative project at IBM’s Watson headquarters in New York. The two tech chiefs were joined on stage by president and CEO of the Japan Post Group, Taizo Nishimuro – himself almost 80 years old. Nishimuro discussed the enormous pressure that his home country is under from its growing population over the age of 65. The Apple/IBM scheme will start by supplying iPads to the elderly Japanese community, containing downloaded iOS apps designed to support older citizens. For example, large typefaces and dictation features will be included, specifically developed to help those who are hard of hearing or have difficulties with their vision. IBM has also pledged a collection of custom-built apps via its Global Business Services group, which will feature medication reminders, exercise information and diet apps, as well as grocery shopping and job search services.

Submission + - Leggo store detains 11-year old boy for shopping alone

darkonc writes: An 11 year old goes into a Leggo store in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) with $200 in hard earned cash ... and doesn't come out. When his father comes to the store to meet him for lunch, he finds his son 'detained' by the store manager and a security guard — for shopping alone. Apparently, Leggo stores have a policy of apprehending young children who shop without their parents.

Submission + - Nuclear waste: Bury nuclear waste down a very deep hole, say scientists (sciencedaily.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Scientists at the University of Sheffield calculate that all of the UK's high level nuclear waste from spent fuel reprocessing could be disposed of in just six boreholes 5km deep, fitting within a site no larger than a football pitch.

The concept — called deep borehole disposal — has been developed primarily in the UK but is likely to see its first field trials in the USA next year. If the trials are successful, the USA hopes to dispose of its 'hottest' and most radioactive waste — left over from plutonium production and currently stored at Hanford in Washington State — in a deep borehole.
