Comment Re:Not bloody likely (Score 1) 738

Started when I was 19. I'm 66 now and still enjoying writing code.

Work from home full time and my employer is happy to have me. They know it's going to take one or 2 of their high valued experts to do the work I'm doing now.

If I'm slowing down, it's not apparent (to me).

Article doesn't apply to lots of us.

And someone has to use it.

I do every day. Mainframe Assembler (z/OS) and I still manage to continue to abuse emacs in the process.

Mainframe Assembler with a nice set of structured programming macros. Nirvana!

Submission + - Myanmar Under Massive DDoS Attack (arbornetworks.com)

An anonymous reader writes: With national elections just a few days away, a giant 15 Gbps DDoS has completely cut Myanmar off from the Internet (since Monday morning). Last time this happened, the military government severed country-wide Internet connectivity in an effort to block news of the Saffron revolution from getting out. This times it is unclear if it is the government or outside groups trying to disrupt Burma Internet communication. Apparently the attack is so large, that upstream ISPs have chosen to just drop all traffic to Myanmar Internet addresses space.

Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 2 vs. Early Fedora 13 Benchmarks 157

Given that early benchmarks of the Lucid Lynx were less than encouraging, Phoronix decided to take the latest alpha out for a spin and has set it side-by-side with an early look at Fedora 13. "Overall, there are both positive and negative performance changes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2 in relation to Ubuntu 9.10. Most of the negative regressions are attributed to the EXT4 file-system losing some of its performance charm. With using a pre-alpha snapshot of Fedora 13 and the benchmark results just being provided for reference purposes, we will hold off on looking into greater detail at this next Red Hat Linux update until it matures."

Surgeon Makes Tutorial DVD For Conscious Open-Heart Surgery 170

Lanxon writes "Swaroup Anand, 23, from Bangalore, was fully conscious as he underwent open-heart surgery. An epidural to the neck, administered at the city’s Wockhardt Hospital, numbed his body during the procedure. Dr Vivek Jawali pioneered the technique ten years ago and has recently released a tutorial on DVD, which gives a step-by-step guide to the procedure for other surgeons to watch and learn from."

Comment The holy hell option (Score 1) 251

I don't understand all this talk about blocking and avoiding.

When I get spam from legitimate companies I raise holy hell.

I just had Soft Surroundings decide it would be OK to send me marketing after I ordered something online. As far as I know, Soft Surroundings is a legitimate company, my wife has been buying stuff from them for years. When they decided it would be OK to start spamming me, I emailed all the standard addresses (sales@, president@, postmaster@, etc.) and told them what I thought. After they promised to stop and didn't I called their 800 number and started yelling. They did stop.

I don't expect spam from legitimate companies and when I get it I figure that's what they have 800 numbers and sales departments for.

Don't let these guys get away with this crap.

Dell Adamo Review — Macho Outside, Sissy Inside 144

Odelia Lee writes with a full review of Dell's new Adamo slimtop over at Gizmodo. While it may have an sleek exterior there are definite gaps (both literal and figurative) in their engineering. "The Adamo is both a compliment and an insult to Dell engineering. It's possibly the most beautiful computer Dell has ever manufactured, but I'm not sure that Dell has caught up to competitors in either aesthetics or power. There have been lots of qualitative Adamo reviews out there, but we got the first of the units that will actually ship to customers, so it's time for real benchmarks. As it happens, performance is really what's at stake here."
