Comment Re:you can buy android without google over there.. (Score 4, Insightful) 149

"Why should Google be allowed to tie the search provider for the phone to the app store provider for the phone? That's the kind of thing Microsoft got shat on for."

Because Google is an independent business competing in a fiercely competitive market? And that gives them the right to bundle their product line anyway they want? Microsoft was a declared monopoly competing against no one in the desktop market - and actively attempting to prevent anyone from competing with them w.r.t to browser.

American analogy: why does McDonalds force me to use their french fries in a combo deal? They should be required to offer Burger King's fries, or cook the ones I bring form home for me! Where do I file my complaint?

Throwing more technology on the pile won't help without a lot of user education, and if you had that you would not need the technology anyway...

1) Create a rational naming convention and use that.

Or

2) use Sharepoint's (base version is free beer) built in versioning system. That is what it is designed for and is one of the few things that SP does well.

I realize it's a great /. tradition to completely ignore the original question and try to dance around it with alternatives, but just ignoring it is not an option.

For example don't user the remote control that came with it, because it has dedicated app buttons that will take 30seconds to fail to launch netflix for you, or worse, offer to walk your wife through wi-fi setup. So you need another remote too. And since they are special your universal remote won't work out of the box, so you'll need to to button to button remapping to get that to work.

You know what would be even better than turning wi-fi off? Not having it at all...kinda of like what the OP asks for.

To answer the OP's question you can buy commercial TV's (like hotel rooms or restaurants buy for their active menus) and they have no smart features. They are widely available at commerical type stores. Lg also makes them up to 65" (we have some installed here). Big, dumb panel. Here is their site:

Here's a 65" one from Staples:

Agreed. I'd love to ditch the tuner. what a pain in the ass having it switch inputs to the tuner automatically if you dare touch certain remote buttons. "Guide" is what kills me, as I usually adjust volume on TV the hit guide. Whoops, have to adjust volume then hit CABLE, then hit guide...but now to clear the guide I have to Exit, exit, input, input, input then cable, then guide again. I'd keep the speakers if I could, but would take no smart, no tuner, no speakers over smart+tuner+speakers.

"marty, your just not thinking 4th dimension-ally". We're not talking about day to day activities here, we are talking about periodic archiving. First CD drives use different laser than BD (red vs blue). So there is a cost to making BD drive read/write Cd drives. I could see CD write and even CD read being dropped from future BD drives. Actually - can the PS4 read a CD? I don't think it can. So CD's can go away while BD stays.

To your second point I don't want a device I use once every 3 months (or once a year!) stuck in my laptop, thanks. My laptop didn't come with a tape backup either. And I really don't need one in my desktop either - it just gets in the way. I would much rather have a small portable BD burner that I can use to back up all my machines and then put away when I am done with it. And that's what I have.

Enterprise Tape isn't going away, and BD will also be a round for another 10+ years at least. And if BD-XL is used for 4k video probably even longer...

This may be my last time, as I am now using AWS Glacier for all our personal photos/vids and that accounts for about 100G of the total 150G in content. I also copy everything to a mechanical USB drive and store it at my office. I think AWS + USB will cover me

Our safe is in the basement, on a high shelf. Keep in mind fireproof safes need a disecant as you *will* get moisture in them. Or use zip lock baggies.

great, except that is not what electrical tape is for. You should have used wire nuts (or 'caps') to connect the two wires. Heat degrades electrical tape, and a coffer grinder draws enough current to heat the cable. And it is likely in the kitchen where it may be exposed to more heat anyway. Your friend should smile nicely, thank you, then throw it out and buy a new one...

A proper fix would be to replace the cord at the terminals on the grinder. This would require disassembly, and may not be possible depending on the design. Anything else is a hack. Like the article says "young people are a lost generation who can no longer fix gadgets"

OP was sold a scary story at the dealer.

On topic: there used to be two headlight types in - round and square. Easy to replace. Pop out, pop in. Once that restriction was lifted, they got more complex and more difficult to change the bulb...
