All major laws cannot be enacted in Thailand without the explicit approval of the King. You can verify this by reading the 2007 Constitution. Publicly, Thai royalty has no influence on the laws. But you'll see otherwise if you read wikileaks.

The pardoning is only for those who have less than 3 years left of their sentence, and only once a year. Those accused of Lese Majeste typically have 5 to 20 year sentences. You're likely to spend several years in prison before being asked to sign a statement that you love the king before you can be released.

I agree that the government loans are inflating the cost of education. The supply (number of universities) is staying the same, while the demand (people who can afford university) is going up. Markets will naturally raise prices to cope - it's effectively a subsidy that profits the university. This is effectively the same argument concerning health insurance, a subsidy inflating medical costs.

But on the other hand, I probably couldn't have afforded my education if I didn't have federal loans to help . . .

There might be another solution, such as using the loan money to instead increase the number of universities - ie increase the supply.

I, and many others I know in a forum I frequent, won't upgrade to SP3 as it breaks USB. It's a known bug (for many years) that USB becomes significantly slower in SP3 (it's not known what hardware configurations can avoid the bug). This causes problems with data transfer speeds.

Submission + - Facebook/Twitter banned in Thailand for Election (reuters.com)

societyofrobots writes: In the run up to the July 3rd election in Thailand, use of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media are banned for campaigning and other election related purposes.

Offenders face a maximum six months in prison and a 10,000 baht ($330) fine. The ban includes sending short telephone texts and forwarding emails.

"There will be a unit of more than 100 officers to monitor this," said police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri of the social media ban. "If we can track the origin of (an online message) right away, we will block the site and make an arrest. But if the sites are registered overseas and we can't check the origin, we'll first block it and ask the IP (Internet Protocol) providers for further investigation," Prawut said.

But not any more than ergotamines, caffeine, pure oxygen inhalation, or a simple ice pack applied to the head - much better options when 'drain bramage' is a concern.

Submission + - US Citizen Arrested while in Thailand for Blog (asiancorrespondent.com)

societyofrobots writes: A US citizen, upon visiting Thailand for medical treatment, was arrested for lese majeste (insulting the king) and computer crimes ("entering false information into a computer system"). He is charged for posting a link on his blog to a banned book, The King Never Smiles, and for translating excerpts of it. He made the posting four years ago in 2007, while in the US. Trials for lese majeste are traditionally held in secret, for reasons of 'national security'. AFP has more information.

Submission + - Thailand 'Cyber Scouts' Censor Web (yahoo.com)

societyofrobots writes: Since the military coup of 2006, Thailand's media freedoms have continually been downgraded. A growing tactic among the ruling elite is to accuse the political opposition of insulting the king, allowing for censorship and political imprisonment of those who dare speak out. In 2010, web censorship began to reach the scales of China and Iran. Now, Thailand has formed a group of volunteers called Cyber-Scouts to patrol the web looking for comments deemed to insult the monarchy. AFP also has a video.

I just launched a balloon (again) last Sunday.

The balloon and helium alone cost us $800 (we made it to 103k ft using a bigger more expensive balloon).

Unless people are giving you free money, thats the bare minimum - not even accounting for the cost of tracking and filming equipment. Or the gas needed to drive 4 hours following the balloon . . .
