Submission + - 2008 Lunar Lander Challenge Teams Announced

anzha writes: "The X Prize Foundation announced on Monday the competing teams for the 2008 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. This year there are ten teams competing for the two prizes. The XPF has a nice matchup utility to compare the different teams' rockets. The one downside to this year though is that the competition will not have an accompanying X Prize Cup. It will be webcast though. Full disclosure: I am on a team."

Submission + - Google Lunar X Prize Team Drops Out

anzha writes: "On Saturday, after the vaunted First Team Summit was completed in Strasbourg, The Southern California Selene Group announced publicly that they are dropping out of the Google Lunar X Prize. Citing very strong differences in opinions over how the X Prize was being run, the team felt they could no longer participate. On the flip side, the X Prize Foundation announced at the team summit that there are four new teams. With the drop out, there are now thirteen official competitive teams. Assuredly, there are more to come."

anzha writes: "Freeman Dyson recently wrote a review of two books on global warming. In a reaction to the review a group of climate scientists, that run the blog entitled Real Climate, responded on multiple points. In fact, their response, on the points they covered, was rather scorching and stated that his review was 'mostly shaped by his own rather selective vision.' Ouch."

anzha writes: "Sun Microsystems announced today that they are acquiring Cluster File Systems Inc. CFS owns the intellectual property related to and develops the open source file system known as Lustre. The question now is whether or not Sun will keep Lustre an open source file system or not. Will they also be able to grow it successfully to take on their chief rival's product in the cluster file system arena? Or will it languish?"
