Comment It's the games that need to be cheaper! (Score 1) 232

I bought a PS3 for many of the reasons stated above, BlueRay+Media center capabilities and free online gaming being the biggest one. The price is worth it. It's just as Sony has said, it's not just a gaming machine.

What I am worried about is the price of games. Here in Sweden we pay 699-599 (62,25-55â) for a new game, if you are lucky some of the bigger electric chains have it for 499 (45,85â) (including sales tax).
That's too much. Luckily the PS3 is REGION FREE when it comes to games (Army of Two is the only region locked game so far). So I buy almost all my games from the UK now (play.com)
They need to lower the prices of games for people to consider buying one. It's no fun when you need to buy a extra controller and a game and you have just added 1/4 of the original unit's price to your expenses.

So boxee is pretty much useless if you don't live in the United States (or have a proxy there)...

A Xbox360 would be nice too but Netflix doesn't exist here... neither does the Video store on my PS3... WTF! Even Sony produced movies aren't rented out in the PSN Store because of f-ing licensing issues

Lucky for us Swedes we still have Piratebay ;)

D&D Co-Creator Gary Gygax Has Passed Away 512

Mearlus writes "In the recent past co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons Gary Gygax has worked with Troll Lord Games, a small tabletop RPG publisher. Their forums have up a post noting that Mr. Gygax has apparently passed away. Gygax was known, along with Dave Arneson, as the Father of Roleplaying." Many sites are featuring posts on Gygax's impact on gaming, including touching entries on Salon and CNet.

Submission + - One step closer for Spaceport America

space_hippy writes: Unofficially, The Spaceport America will get help from the residence from Dona Ana county in New Mexico.
From the BBC article:

Residents in the US state of New Mexico have approved a new tax to build the nation's first commercial spaceport.
From the Las Cruces Sun News paper article:

The one-quarter of 1 percent increase in gross receipts tax will take effect Jan. 1. Proceeds from the tax will be used to help pay for construction of Spaceport America planned for a remote site in southern Sierra County.
The approval of the additional sales tax happened by only a slim margin. Time will tell if this is a step towards the future for the residence of New Mexico or a political pipedream.

Submission + - Dell decides on Linux

john g the 4th writes: "Dell has decided to begin offering pre-installed linux laptops and desktops after kicking the idea around over the last few months, and even offering an online survey a couple weeks ago. The decision has come after a great deal of pressure has been put on Dell from the linux community to start offering products sans-Windows.
From the article:

"At least half of the comments effectively said, 'We want Free Software, GPL-licensed drivers which are maintained in kernel.org, for all hardware in Dell systems,'" Domsch wrote in his blog. "This request is not new to us — it's been our standard operating procedure for the last eight years on PowerEdge servers, which today have no closed-source drivers necessary. For new Linux desktops and notebooks, we'll use drivers already in the mainline kernel.org kernels for as many components as possible. In these cases, the drivers will be included in your distribution of choice. This includes storage, wired networking, power management, USB and more."
No current time frame has been offered up as of yet, but some of the details on which models, and distros to be offered are going to be released in the near future. One small step for penguins.. one giant leap for penguin kind...."

Submission + - Hackers Turn $300 Apple TV into Cheapest Max

Anonymous Coward writes: "Apple TV is dead, long live the Mac Nano. Sort of.

Just two weeks after Apple released its streaming media box to the public, hackers successfully installed OS X, Apple's desktop operating system, on the $300 device, making it the cheapest PC Cupertino has ever sold.

"The breakthrough is done, OS X runs on Apple TV!" wrote "Semthex," the anonymous hacker responsible for the mod, at his website. "Now we got (the) low-budget Mac we ever wanted."
