The thing is, this new operating system will evolve like just about every other "we'll make it smaller and simpler" systems. If they are the next big thing, then sooner or later they'll go down the path of adding everything into their system that they ripped the other guys for having, then act like they invented it.

Conservatives want to pass their values and culture and mythology on to their kids. But, for many of them, public schools are an obstacle to that. The key problem in the conservative mind with public schools is that the melting pot has given way to a multiculturalism that creates a climate of fear regarding ones own culture - exactly the opposite of what people want.

This isn't just public schools, and it isn't about religion, its everything conservative these days - lower taxes are just a form of saying, "I disagree with the public direction, so I want no public at all." They are allowed to say that, and when the liberals call them selfish for it, the end result will be a hastening to this trend of withdrawal. Why participate in something that is detrimental to you, and you don't believe is good for the public overall?

The ironic thing is that, even though liberals talk up a good game about the commons, you'll find they are withdrawing from the public as well. Of course, its long been known that rich people send their kids to private schools regardless of their political stripes, but you'll see it in their spheres.

First Mt. Laurel and Abbot decisions, then, massive property taxes, and now this. What was once the Garden State is turning itself into a wasteland.

I'm just throwing it out there, but I had a chance to play with Embarcadero XE3, and am going through the trial of XE4, and if you are looking to write native C++ windows apps, its hands down better than Visual Studio could dream of. It's faster, I prefer Firemonkey to WPF, and its also a bit more portable...can hit Mac desktops as well and there's an IOS version I guess in the works. Plus, if you want to write a standard Windows forms app, I think VCL and all the rich VCL controls is way better than using old resource editor and some hokey MFC.

Just saying. Everyone is talking Eclipse vs Visual Studio, but honestly, Embarcadero is really worth a serious look.

Binary formats had only one advantage, and that was that you could read them directly into a C struct. But even then, that advantage disappeared when portability became an issue. That elegant fread into a struct, whatever, turns into a rat's nest when you have to deal with big endian vs lil endian, differing integer sizes... parsing text is a pain in the rear, but it is a less of a pain in the rear than looking at some binary data in the debugger wondering what went wrong.

It is a -fact- that even if we completely cut global CO2 emissions to zero, it would take at least 1,000 years for CO2 to revert to pre-industrial levels. So, yes, while the right wing is looney, they are right on one key point - within our lifetimes, massive CO2 cutbacks will not accomplish anything, other than to make more people poorer.
