It's against federal law to make a machine gun. In Tennessee, as long as he doesn't break any federal laws, he can do whatever he wants without the federal license, but he cannot he doesn't sell what he produces. If he keeps it personally, he isn't even required to put a serial number on the receiver. If he wants to sell it at a later time, however, he's required put a serial on it, and he also may invoke the wrath of the ATF. It's said that you can sell a reasonable number of homemade firearms per year without requiring the manufacturer's license, but I believe that reasonable number is arbitrarily set by the ATF agents.

Disclaimer: I've never made my own firearm, and if I did, I certainly wouldn't sell it; between the risk of federal prison and liability if it blows up, if I had to get rid of the thing, it would be destroyed.

Submission + - Windows 8 Explorer returns to XP roots (extremetech.com) 1

MrSeb writes: "There's good news and bad news. The bad: the much-maligned ribbon UI will take center stage in Windows 8 Explorer. The good: the Up button, which sadly met its untimely demise sometime between XP and Vista, is returning!

Beyond the ribbon, though, Windows 8 Explorer has a lot more in common with Windows XP than Vista or 7. The customizable toolbar is back (and the ribbon UI can be collapsed into a standard menu bar), and the cruft at the top and bottom of the window have been stripped down into a functional title bar and a one-line status bar at the bottom.

Almost all of the other changes (and there an awful lot) revolve around the ribbon UI, however: more shortcuts, more exposure to lesser-known functions, and even some context tabs for things like managing pictures and disks.

The best bit, though, is that Open Command Prompt is now available from the File menu."

Submission + - Former TSA Agent Admits to Aiding Drug Dealer (foxnews.com)

mrquagmire writes: A former federal security officer has admitted helping a man accused of running a drug ring evade security and smuggle money through the Buffalo Niagara Airport.
Minnetta Walker was arrested in March. She admitted Friday in federal court helping the man get around airport security scanners, The Buffalo News reported.
As a behavioral detection officer, Walker was trained to observe and analyze human behavior and had unrestricted access to the airport and its security stations. Sometimes, she'd direct travelers she appeared to know, including Frank, away from security lines where body image scanners or pat-downs might detect large sums of cash, and escort them to their gates so they wouldn't be pulled aside for random inspections, authorities said. She'd also alert travelers to the presence of undercover law enforcement officers, authorities said.

Submission + - Potentially life-supporting planet found (swissinfo.ch)

il_genio writes: Researchers from the Geneva astronomical observatory have discovered a planet which they say is one of the best candidates for the ability to support life.

The planet – known as HD 85512 b — and its star — HD 85512 – are some 36 light years away from our solar system, according to an article published in the specialist magazine "Astronomy & Astrophysics".

It is 3.6 times heavier than Earth and takes just 54 days to orbit its sun.

The article says the planet is at the inside limit of the “habitable zone”, defined as the distance close enough to its star to stop water freezing, and far enough to prevent it evaporating away.

Submission + - Blizzard Says World Of Warcraft Is Far From Over (gamergaia.com)

Calidreth writes: With the recent explosion in free-to-play gaming, especially in the MMO genre, many fear for the survival of traditional subscription and one off paid games. At the spearhead of this concern is the long time MMO king World of Warcraft; with a recent decrease in subscriber numbers, many feel that this could spell the beginning of the end for WOW. Warcraft developers Blizzard, however, strongly disagree.

Submission + - Microsoft 'Ribbonizes' Windows 8 File Manager (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: "Microsoft said on Monday that it will 'ribbonize' the file manager in next year's Windows 8, adding Explorer to the short list of integrated applications that already sport the interface in Windows 7. Microsoft's Alex Simons, director of program management, released screenshots of the new ribbon interface planned for Explorer (scroll way down). 'We evaluated several different UI [user interface] command affordances including expanded versions of the Vista/Windows 7 command bar, Windows 95/Windows XP style toolbars and menus, several entirely new UI approaches, and the Office style ribbon,' explained Simons. 'Of these, the ribbon approach offered benefits in line with our goals.' Plans by Microsoft and others — including Mozilla at one point — to ribbonize applications have often met resistance. 'We knew that using a ribbon for Explorer would likely be met with skepticism by a set of power users, but there are clear benefits,' Simons said."

Submission + - Gears Of War 3 "Season Pass" Idea Is Ludicrous (gamergaia.com)

Calidreth writes: The whole DLC (downloadable content) add-on concept is continuing to be more and more of a trend these days, especially amongst titles on the Xbox 360. Instead of putting all their content on the completed retail version, developers are starting to hold back some of that content in the hopes of making some extra money.
