This article from MATLAB News & Notes that came out on the 30th anniversary is pretty interesting - there are some nice details in it about the original system. It was co-authored by Dick Gran, one of the engineers who helped design the real thing. I saw Dick Gran give a talk on this subject and it was really interesting.
