I feel javascript is broken because it doesn't even have an import statement (you'd have to use the awful require.js). Even the lowly C and many varieties of assemblers have in-line importation via preprocessor. Javascript's dependency model is fundamentally broken, especially if you have to use HTML script includes. Couple this with an awful object model, strange string behavior, and obscene variable abuse in a lisp-like language that wants to pretend it's C and you have a disaster language.

Would you recommend any books for learning javascript at a deeper level? My frustrations mount with every javascript project that's thrown at me.

Also, do you think Java is really hellish? It's got its quirks, but since I discovered Effective Java and made heavier use of interfaces, it's been way more delightful.

They don't give the power of the shock in either the summary or the article. Perhaps these people valued their time enough that they'd rather have the electric shock and move onto other things that day. I mean, if I could get money and extra 15 minutes out for my day for a brief shock, I might consider that although I enjoy being alone for long stretches of time. What is the opportunity cost here?

Also, Slashdot: a place where nerds come together to talk about being alone.

You scare me on so many levels. Another restriction on freedom that's absolutely essential for a free society is mandatory education? And without it, the population can fall prey to charismatic demagogues? I guess that's why the Prussians, the Soviets, the Nazis, the Chi-Coms, and the hosts of other nasty totalitarian assholes instituted MANDATORY EDUCATION for the masses... oh wait, they did it instead to control the populace. Plato is VERY clear in his Republic that his "Special Dictatorship" can only exist while mandatory, censored education is the law of the land. Remember, the Founding Fathers didn't need a mandatory education to establish this nation and form the well-thought out laws that govern it. Ever read the Federalist (or anti-federalist, for that matter) Papers in school? Probably not, because they're above a high-school reading level today. And, pray tell, who is going to be doing the auditing of schools, both private and public? You?
