Submission + - Asterisk 1.4 released

Asterisk Team writes: After over a year since the 1.2 release, the Asterisk Development Team is pleased to announce the first release
in the Asterisk 1.4 series, Asterisk 1.4.0!

Asterisk is one of the most popular and extensible telephone systems in the world, offering flexibility, functionality and features not available in advanced, high-end (high-cost) proprietary business systems. Asterisk is a complete IP PBX (private branch exchange) for businesses, and best of all, it is open source software meaning that it is absolutely free.

See the CHANGES file for a list of the new features and enhancements since 1.2.

As always, the source can be downloaded from http://asterisk.org/downloads

Submission + - DRM free file sharing with record label profits

Tim writes: "Napster and Yahoo Music face growing problems with DRM interoperability, iTunes sales are not growing as quickly, but emusic is expanding rapidly. There is a subscription file sharing model which could reduce costs for record labels whilst guaranteeing profit. This distribution model also takes into accout the privacy issues which arise from monitoring users and leaves room for new labels and artists representing themselves."

Submission + - Promising new effort to port GTK+ to Aqua

Gorgonzola writes: Although there have been several efforts in the past (including this one, until fairly recently none of them turned out to be successful. Somehow, although officially sanctioned by the GTK+ project, GTK+ for Mac OS X remained under the radar. It is pretty rare to see an internship report on porting a GUI toolkit, so far this seems to be the most promising efforts in this field. It would be nice to see even more cross-pollination between the Linux and the OS X world than there already is. As a Mac user I'd love to have Aqua versions of all those nice GTK+ (and Gnome of course) applications I have gotten used to on Linux.

Submission + - Sex, Violence, Tension, & Video Games

simoniker writes: Gamasutra has just posted an interview with author Gerard Jones, subtitled 'Sex, Violence, Tension and Comic Books', in which the writer of 'Killing Monsters' talks about violence and games eloquently. When asked: 'What do you think it is in your work that resonates with the gaming community?', Jones comments: "Video games have been so much under attack recently, that I think there's a certain nervousness. Most people in this business are very pleasant and non-confrontational and the fact that they are being reviled as the causes of crime, causes of violence, is disturbing. On the one hand, I think people want to know how to respond to those criticisms. But on the other hand, I think there's some genuine anxiety that maybe games have a bad side, maybe there is a problem, and how do we deal with any guilt or fear?" He goes on to suggest of attacks on gaming: "I would say now we're kind of at the tail end. If games continue to push boundaries, particular ones could come under attack. A lot of it's just the medium being around long enough that people have realized the world hasn't gone to hell."
