Submission + - AT&T Censors 4chan server 13

An anonymous reader writes: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/94pf2/att_is_now_blocking_all_access_to_img4chanorg/ Details how img.4chan.org (home of the notorious /b/ — "Random" image board) is being actively blocked by AT&T. According to the scant details available on 4chan and Reddit there are reports that img.4chan.org has become inaccessible from California to Texas and some reports claim as far east as Connecticut. Supposedly this is to stop a ring of pedophiles, but as one Reddit poster said it best "First the came for the pedophiles and I was not a pedophile..."
Disturbing news indeed.

Submission + - Sudoku Grab iPhone app explained (blogspot.com)

iamflimflam1 writes: About six months ago I wrote an app for the iPhone that lets you take a picture of a Sudoku puzzle and applies some image processing and OCR techniques to capture it. I've been getting a few emails from people every week asking how it works, so I thought I'd do a post and explain it all. So if you're interested in image processing, follow the link and take a look.

Submission + - Star Trek DVD to Hide Secret Webcam Hologram (variety.com)

suraj.sun writes: Paramount Home Entertainment's "Star Trek" DVD and Blu-ray release is about to again boldly go where no one has gone before — with a bonus feature on the packaging that opens up an interactive tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

With the packaging feature dubbed "augmented reality," consumers will be able to hold their disc packaging in front of any standard webcam to unlock an interactive hologram on the computer screen, through which they can tour five cabins on the Enterprise, even shooting enemies from the ship's deck.

Users will have to log in to a website to access the feature, but they control the hologram by holding the disc packaging.

"If you took the visual cue in the package and turned your hand, then you're turning the ship," Paramount homevideo senior VP of brand marketing Bob Buchi said.

The technology has been used before for magazine covers and other types of product packaging, though this is a first for a major home entertainment release.

An early version of the feature, which Paramount tried for the international theatrical release of the film, can be accessed at experience-the-enterprise.com.

Submission + - Facebook Shows a Married Woman's Pic in Singles Ad (downloadsquad.com)

suraj.sun writes: Facebook Displays a Married Woman's Pic in Hot Singles Ad to HER Husband :

According to Facebook it's all part of the acceptable use policy you agreed to. No, I'm not kidding. That red box above contains an ad that was displayed to Peter Smith, who no doubt agrees that the woman in the image is hot — although he suspected she wasn't single. You guessed it, that's his wife — consultant Cheryl Smith ( http://www.culturesmithconsulting.com/change-your-facebook-settings-or-else/ ).

Is this not the same Facebook that just went back and retooled a TOS that users found objectionable? Didn't they just finish apologizing and kissing our butts over the crapstorm that ensued?

Here's what the Facebook settings page has to say:

" Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user's friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules. "

All you have to do to prevent this is sign in to Facebook and click through to (get ready) -> Settings -> Privacy -> News Feed and Wall -> Facebook Ads -> Appearance in Facebook Ads and click "no one." Unless, of course, you want to be semifamous and have your picture used to push some garbage product or website without your knowledge.

Submission + - Amazon Makes "1984" And "Animal Farm& (nytimes.com) 2

Oracle Goddess writes: "In a story just dripping with irony, Amazon Kindle owners awoke this morning to discover that "1984" and "Animal Farm" had mysteriously disappeared from their e-book readers. These were books that they had bought and paid for, and thought they owned. Apparently the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and apparently Amazon, whose business lives and dies by publisher happiness, caved. It electronically deleted all books by this author from people's Kindles and credited their accounts for the price. Amazon Customer service responded to queries by stating that. "We've always been at war with Eastasia.""

Submission + - 11 Million Worldwide Safari 4 downloads in 3 days (blogspot.com)

mcfar45 writes: "One of Apple's latest press releases states that "more than 11 million copies of Safari 4 have been downloaded in the first three days of its release, including more than six million downloads of Safari for Windows.". This is an astounding number of downloads for Safari but I can't help think that the 6 million Windows Downloads are from people accidentally downloading it when they update iTunes or Quicktime because Apple has the checkbox checked."
