There's a lot of things people have to understand before assuming the inevitable world of ultra portable computing comes in to take over the computing world. Everything is not as it seems, and companies don't want you to see it any other way.

When was the last time you saw someone with a tablet? When was the last time you saw someone with a tablet that wasn't from Apple? The iPad maybe selling well, but not other tablets. HP gave up cause their tablets weren't selling, and BestBuy wanted HP to take them back. In fact, from what I understand is that only Apple has had successful sales of tablets. Everyone else is still trying to wonder why their tablets aren't flying off the self. This means that only Apples tablets are selling, and probably due to it just being an Apple product.

The ultra portable laptops are a result of people not needing the processing power of modern PCs, but why is that? About 10 years ago we really didn't need anything more then 1Ghz for web surfing, email, and word processing. Today, that hasn't changed. What did change is the gaming industry. When the Xbox 360 and PS3 took PC gaming away, so did the need for fast hardware. Most people game on their tablets, as most people did on their PCs. The difference is that no PC game today needs the latest and greatest hardware. If anything, you could use a PC from 4 years ago and still play games just fine.

If you build it, they will come. Make applications that need processing power, and you'll see people coming back to desktop PCs. I'd also have to wonder why we aren't building our own laptops? Their modular just like desktop PCs, but nobody has made a standard to build a laptop around. You know, like ATX for motherboards and cases in desktops.

Comment Where's the freaking software? (Score 1) 661

I'd be more exited if applications took advantage of the cores. Would be nice if Firefox used more then 1 core. Would be nice if World of Warcraft used more then 1 core. I know WoW uses the second core for sound, but that doesn't count.

So many games, and so many applications should really use these cores, but they're not. We even have OpenCL which should make this easier, but nobody is using it.

Finland To Legalize Use of Unsecured Wi-Fi 151

Apotekaren writes "The Finnish Ministry of Justice has started preparing changes to a current law that criminalizes using unsecured wireless hot spots (Google translation; Finnish original). The reasoning includes the impossibility of tracking unlawful use, the ease of securing networks, and the lack of real damage done by this activity. It is also hard for a user to know if an unsecured network is intended for public use or not. The increased ubiquity of legal, open networks in parks, airports, and other public places has also influenced this move by the Ministry of Justice."

If anyone wants to know how screwed up that country is, just ask any Greek, as they've been enslaved by them for 300+ years. They're trying to join Europe to gain the Euro, but Greece won't let them. Turkey was a country that cut off your hand for stealing. That was their version of a mistermeaner.

They haven't gone a long way from their past. In my book they're just as bad as North Korea, but America doesn't mind because Turkey helps them out in the middle east.

Comment They thought this through (Score 1) 514

Doesn't anyone realize that AT&T did this in the correct sequence? First they raised the price of canceling from AT&T, if you're a smart phone user, which was June 1st. Now, they changed their data plans, which would obviously have pissed off smart phone users. What do pissed off customers do? They switch providers.

Customers can't switch because they'll have to pay $300+ for the cancellation fee. They probably won't switch because if you already have a unlimited data plan, it's still unlimited from what I understand. So this just makes new customers run away. I'm a T-Mobile user and I was thinking about switching, until all this bull crap started happening.

The Government should really stop this crap with all cell phone providers, as it's unfair to customers. Can't buy a smart phone, without being required to get a data plan. Canceling will cost an absurd amount of money. How can cell phone companies be competitive, when all they're doing is locking people into their service and changing contracts in order to suck more money away from customers?

Comment Popular Mechanics who? (Score 1) 514

There's just so much wrong going on with what they said.

#1 Electricity isn't data bandwidth. AT&T uses deviant methods to get people to use this data plan. They do this by forcing smart phones to come with a data plan, and even disabling wifi or just removing wifi from their phones, like the LG Arena. On top of it all, the GPS devices have no option for Offline-GPS, so that you can store the map data on your phones SD card instead of getting it through the network. When was the last time that the electric company ever forced you to use their service? You can plug devices into generators or cars.

#2 Data bandwidth isn't like a dam or a nuclear power plant, so why are we comparing it to electricity? Why not compare it to cable modems, FIOS, or DSL where it is unlimited? I doubt Verizon's FIOS is using more resources then a Verizon cell phone plan, especially if you consider that cell phone data plans exist on already established cell phone networks, like DSL does. So how is it a burden for any of these carriers?

#3 This crap happened to AOL, and that didn't work. I remember when my AOL bill was hundreds of dollars, because it was easy to go over.

#4 Isn't anyone afraid this might limit the internet? Rather then improving their infrastructure, they rather charge us more for far less? We could have had live streaming media with our portable devices, or online gaming with them.

I would like to have a smart phone without a data plan. I get free wifi hot spots from Optimum Online, so why the hell do I need a data plan? Plus, the wifi hot spots is unlimited data. I had to buy my smart phone off ebay just to avoid the monthly cost of the data plan. I wouldn't mind these new changes if I had the option to avoid the data plan when buying a smart phone.

I thought American Idolt was the reason why TV died. Yes, it's dead. If you look at American idol from IMDB, it has terrible ratings. I wanna stop my TV service because there's no real TV. Everything they have is complete junk today. I was born in the 80's, like most smart people, and I can't bare to watch the dribble they have today. I loved to watch Megas XLR, and that's gone. They brought back the gayest sequel to Knight Rider in 2008, and it made me wanna find a black Firebird and drive away the suffering it caused. What ever happened to Anime? When American TV sucks, at least you can always fall back onto Anime. I loved watching Drawn Together and that's canceled too. All that's left is Adult Swim, and their stuff is getting retarded. Only Aqua Teen Hunger Force is worth watching. Nowadays I enjoy waiting for the next episode of RedVSBlue and whatever James Rofle makes. All internet based!

Comment If software developers build it, they will come... (Score 1) 549

The reason this problem exists is because software isn't evolving at the same rate as hardware. You can use a computer that's 10 years old and still do all the things that you need to do today. The only exception is gaming, and content creation like movies, music, and other such art. The problem is that there's very few software developers that are on a pay roll. That and DRM prevents what software can do on your PC. You can't edit videos and put music in it from your favorite band without getting attacked. You can't have a HTPC that streams Live HDTV HBO special to your iPhone without jumping through loop holes. If all you're allowed to do is surf the web and use a word processor, then why the hell do we ever need anything made in the past 10 years? Oh and computer games. With Xbox 360 and PS3 forcing developers to make games for their consoles first, PCs can't take advantage of their hardware. BTW, PC gaming has been pushing consumers to own more advanced hardware just to play games. Yet, the biggest game that does that today is World of Warcraft. A game that's over 5 years old. Take away IP/DRM restrictions and produce games that could only run on powerful PCs and suddenly people give a shit about owning better PC hardware, especially desktops.

Comment HardOCP and TechReport do it as well. (Score 2, Interesting) 660

Every time HardOCP or TechReport mention web browsers, ADBlock Plus is sure to follow in the discussion. When that happens, administrators go ban crazy on their asses. If your tech website relies on revenue from ads to the point when you ban forum posters, you're just digging a slow grave for your site. The website ads are nothing more then another form of pop-up ads.

PC games would benefit from having higher detail, more models, and less loading screems in games. I really hate having to enter rooms and watch a loading screen. The odd thing is that, Direct X11 is irrelevant to making better PC games. Though graphics don't make great games, they just make great games better, or hide truly shitty games with glitter. When I saw Half Life 2 use physics, I saw a whole new era of gaming. Yet, I haven't seen any games use it besides making people die realistically.

Comment Don't abuse something that's a privilege. (Score 1) 1051

Remember when websites used to use pop up ads? Always had to click it off, and usually, another would pop back up. This is sorta the same problem here, only you can't close the ads. Plus, a lot of websites like to abuse them, like HardOCP does. I swear, without Adblock Plus, I'd have a seizure from induced epilepsy, cause of the flashing ads. Just saw Ars Technica's website, and it's pretty bad. What do visitors get to see, from Ars Technica? Regurgitated tech news that every tech website has? I have a hard time visiting HardOCP with Kyle Bennetts skewed comments, with all the ads they have on their. Another thing, is that tech websites seem to be doing this a lot, and will complain about Adblock Plus. Tech-Report and HardOCP will permanently ban forum members, if they mention Adblock Plus. BTW, if you think you're getting an unbiased review from these websites, try to remember they can't give out information that will deny sales to the product. Otherwise, they'll never get their hands on new hardware to review. It's not magic that these websites all release benchmarks on a single day. I remember spending hours to figure out why Windows XP would always crash and reset on boot when I put together a new system, using a Abit BF6 motherboard, which according to FiringSquad was the best motherboard ever. Long and behold the default motherboard settings had an IRQ conflict. You're better off visiting Newegg, and reading user comments about the hardware. The only good thing about tech websites is their benchmarks, and there's hundreds of other websites that have benchmarks. Wanna stop people from using AdBlockers? Then host the ads on your site, and keep it unintuitive. Majority of websites have the ads hosted on another server, usually through another company. How you think adblockers work? Majority of ads are hosted on common servers. All you gotta do is block those servers and 99% of website ads are gone. Too many good reasons to use an ad blocker. #1 Faster load times. Majority of it is flash or gif based, and animates. #2 Some people don't have unlimited internet, and would like to save bandwidth, by avoiding ads they don't click anyway. #3 Less likely to get a virus, as has happened to some people in the past. Honestly, unless other websites stop with annoying ads, then I'll keep my adblocker. I'm too lazy to allow some websites to show ads, and don't give a damn either. Keep it to one ad, and don't animate it. Adblocker gave me back my internet.

A trouble code isn't intellectual property, it's just a method to prevent anyone but dealers to repair vehicles. I personally repair my own cars, because I don't trust any mechanics. I've worked in a garage, and they do things like skip corners by not installing all the bolts or even components back. Some even break things in the process or don't lube things they should. Sure the car will start and run, but for a how long? I for one would love to see cars being easier to repair, so that consumers can do it themselves. With cars being as advanced as they are, it should be as easy as reading a code to understand what busted. Car manufacturers realize this, and make proprietary codes to prevent anyone else but themselves to correctly repair a vehicle. It's no different then cell phones using proprietary connections to charge the phone, rather then using something like a mini usb port.
