Submission + - Anti-whaling activists with frickin' laser beams!

looncanada writes: New Zealand anti-whaling activist Peter Bethune went on trial in a Tokyo court today for allegedly throwing butyric acid at a crew member of the Japanese "security vessel" Shonan Maru No. 2, the same vessel that rammed and sank Bethune's stealth whale fleet stalking speedboat, the Ayd Gil in January this year. Outside the trial court, some Japanese pro-whaling demonstrators called for Bethune's execution by hanging.

The filter exists because ASCII art is unwanted on Slashdot. Congratulations getting your art through. That doesn't mean it's wanted, and it's certainly not "OB" as your subject says. You could have just typed "A picture of a middle finger" much more easily, and of course that will fit into 32x32.

Penn. AG Corbett Subpoenas Twitter For Bloggers' Names 205

Dthief writes with this from Pennsylvania's ABC27 News: "The state attorney general's office has issued a subpoena threatening officials of the social networking service Twitter with arrest unless they reveal the names of two bloggers who have been critical of Attorney General Tom Corbett and his public corruption investigation. Vic Walczak of the American Civil Liberties Union told Pittsburgh's WTAE-TV that the court action 'raises grave concerns about abuse of the grand jury process to retaliate against political critics and opponents.' He said Americans 'have a right to criticize government officials and to do so anonymously.'"

What does this do that a WIndows 7 HTPC doesn't, though? If you're talking about ease of use, the only thing I have to do on my win7 box is press a button on my remote and Windows Media Center pops up. Yes, I had to buy a WMC-friendly remote that came with a USB receiver. I still don't think this is hard. In fact, the only thing that's "hard" about my setup is that most people don't know you can even do that. They don't know that you can hook a computer to a TV, they don't know WMC exists, and they don't know that you can get a remote for the computer. Astute readers will notice that I said nothing about TV tuners. I don't use one. Comcast gave me a cable box for live TV and DVR features. I just use the computer to stream Netflix and play Blu-Ray/DVD.

Boltzmann Equation Solved, the New Way 104

xt writes "The Boltzmann equation is old news. What's news is that the 140-year-old equation has been solved, using mathematical techniques from the fields of partial differential equations and harmonic analysis, some as new as five years old. This solution provides a new understanding of the effects due to grazing collisions, when neighboring molecules just glance off one another rather than collide head on. We may not understand the theory, but we'll sure love the applications!"

Submission + - NASA Finds Cause of Voyager 2 Glitch (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: "Earlier this month, engineers suspended Voyager 2's science measurements because of an unexpected problem in its communications stream. A glitch in the flight data system, which formats information for radioing to Earth, was believed to be the problem. And now NASA has found the cause of the issue: it was a single bit in the memory location that had erroneously flipped from a 0 to a 1. The cause of the error is yet to be understood, but NASA plans to reset Voyager's memory tomorrow, clearing the error."

Russian Anti-Spam Advisor Accused of Spamming 69

Keith noted that Krebs has an interesting story on a Russian businessman being accused of running a spam ring while serving as an anti-spam adviser to the Russian government. It's a strange tale including an investigation in 2007 that was abandoned when the chief investigator was actually hired to work for the spammer. Not suspicious at all, no way.

Mobile 'Remote Wipe' Thwarts Secret Service 383

bennyboy64 writes "Smartphones that offer the ability to 'remote wipe' are great for when your device goes missing and you want to delete your data so that someone else can't look at it, but not so great for the United States Secret Service, ZDNet reports. The ability to 'remote wipe' some smartphones such as BlackBerry and iPhone was causing havoc for law enforcement agencies, according to USSS special agent Andy Kearns, speaking on mobile phone forensics at a security conference in Australia."

Apple is not stupid? So you think Apple is not doing this on purpose? Yet after losing one prototype they failed to put the necessary measures in place to prevent a second loss. Either Apple is stupid or they are tricky. Hmmm...

And why would Apple want people to buy a new product instead of the current offering? Because they can charge more of course.

There is a difference between carelessness regarding prototypes and stupid marketing through uncontrolled hype. It is possible for Apple to have one of these qualities without the other.

Securing the next generation of one of the hottest devices on the market while testing them in the wild is not an easy task. What "necessary measures" would you suggest?
