Must be a better News for Nerds out there. Guess I'll go take a look.

Seriously. Does anyone have suggestions? I've been on /. so long (not as long as the OP, but still) I don't even know where else to look for News for Nerds. /.bicurious is the last straw for many of us.

I use dream host... "unlimited space and traffic" they really mean don't go crazy and try to host a google.com mirror off of it. Its pretty cheap, I pay $8 a month. You can run cron jobs, mysql databases, etc. I've been happy with it. I know it is karma/referral whoring but you can use my referral code and get a free domain registration: FOLLOWTHEHORIZON (if you already have a domain just use DREAMBUCKS for $50 off your first year). http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?303747

Climate May Be Less Sensitive To CO2 Than Previously Thought 413

a_hanso writes "A new study suggests that the effects of rising levels of carbon dioxide on temperature may be less significant than previously thought. 'The new models predict that given a doubling in CO2 levels from pre-industrial levels, the Earth's surface temperatures will rise by 1.7 to 2.6 degrees C. That is a much tighter range than suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report, which suggested a rise of between 2 to 4.5 degrees C."

Find me a Linux distro that supports 10 year old versions, on the desktop.

These cowboys might I guess....

I love that the link goes to a 404 page... the fact is that MS is discontinuing support for a 10 year old version of an OS. No one else to my knowledge supports an OS as old as XP at the level Microsoft has since Vista and 7 were released. Don't get me wrong, I'll use RHEL or Ubuntu any day over XP or 7 for that matter... but credit is due when credit is due.

An indignant hacker? What's next? Shoplifters of the world uniting?

You sir have no idea what hacking is. Hacking is not stealing, hacking is exploring and creating new uses for devices and software. Pirating is what you are referring to. The "hackers" that are following an internet HOWTO that walks them through downloading ripped PS3 games are nothing more than cheapskates costing the rest of us useful tools like OtherOS.

Submission + - The DoD Wants All Its Robots To Collaborate on the (popsci.com) 1

epdp14 writes: If the idea of being hunted by an unmanned aerial drone is unnerving the thought of multiple robots planning a coordinated attack is downright frightening. Unfortunately for those who have to worry about such things, the DoD is working on software tools that allow robots in the sky and on the ground to do exactly that.

The Collaborative Unmanned Systems Technology Demonstrator (CUSTD) system is explained something like this: Aerial drones can pick out subjects from the air, but depending on a particular drone’s sensor array (for weight reasons, different drones carry different sensors) it may not be able to follow a target indoors or through a crowded urban area. So it calls in a few friends.
