Submission + - Evangelion 20th-anniversary official project "Evangelion to the Moon" (readyfor.jp)

An anonymous reader writes: Evangelion 20th-anniversary official project “Evangelion to the Moon”.A dream project has begun to turn a famous scene from the TV series “Neon Genesis Evangelion” into reality: the scene in which the Spear of Longinus, thrown by Evangelion Unit-00, pierces through the target, shoots out from the Earth and reaches the moon.

The first-ever attempt in which an anime will reach the actual moon! A 24-cm titanium Spear of Longinus will be sent to the actual moon, with transport to the lunar surface and release of the spear planned and executed by the “Evangelion to the Moon Committee”. “Hakuto”, a Japan-based team that engages in lunar exploration projects, will provide technical support for the project, which is scheduled to be executed between the end of 2015 and end of 2016.

The cost for transporting the spear to the moon — approximately 100 million yen — will be procured by crowdfunded donations from fans.

Various rewards, such as “personal certificates from Evangelion to the Moon Committee (with name and serial No.)” and “the right to have your name inscribed on the Spear of Longinus that is sent to the moon”, will be given to those who make donations of specified amounts.

This project will be executed only if the target of 100 million yen is reached by 23:00 on April 5, 2015 (Sun.) (Japan standard time). If the target amount is not reached by that deadline, donations will be refunded. We await your support.

Submission + - RadioShack Puts Customer Data Up For Sale In Bankruptcy Auction (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: For years, RadioShack made a habit of collecting customers’ contact information at checkout. Now, the bankrupt retailer is putting that data on the auction block. A list of RadioShack assets for sale includes more than 65 million customer names and physical addresses, and 13 million email addresses. Bloomberg reports that the asset sale may include phone numbers and information on shopping habits as well. New York's Attorney General says his office will take 'appropriate action' if the data is handed over.

Usually those ad links are done after page load by a script. If you can find out which script is doing that, it's not hard to tell Ad Block Plus to block it. Stuff like that gets a whole-domain block from me because the domain is usually from a company that does nothing other than web ads, thus nothing of value is lost.

If there had been no side-mounted configuration, there would have been no disaster, whether or not the O-rings failed, or ice fell off of the ET. The basic design of the Shuttle stack prevented any form of crew escape, period, and it also subjected the crew vehicle to damage from the launch vehicle. Fortunately we're going back to capsules on top that can perform an emergency escape from the launch vehicle. It's not as sexy as an OMG SPACE PLANE but that was more trouble than it was worth.

And that's why it's a good thing that FH will be using the same parts as F9, only with a few struts added. Don't need heavy launches? Simply don't strut it together, and make three regular launches!

But don't limit your thinking to what we do now with what we have now. Just like with oil reserves increasing as the price of oil goes up (due to cost of recovery), the things people will want to launch rockets for will increase as the cost of launches goes down. And likewise, as the cost of heavy launches comes down, people will start building bigger stuff (or stacking multiple payloads) to make use of it.

I've only bought one LED bulb so far. It lasted maybe 3-4 years, but I would leave it on a good portion of the day. Of course the LEDs will last that long, but the weakest link is the power supply, specifically any electrolytic capacitors in it. I took it apart so I can play with the LEDs but haven't gotten around to it yet. I replaced it with an extra CFL I had lying around. Maybe I've been lucky, but I haven't had much problem with CFLs dying. If I had been having problems with CFLs, I would have bought more LED bulbs by now.
