Users Abandon Ship If Online Video Quality Is Not Up To Snuff, Says Study 155

An anonymous reader writes "The first large scientific study of how people respond to poor video quality on the Internet paints a picture of ever rising user expectations and the willingness to abandon ship if those expectations are not met (PDF). Some nuggets: 1) Some users are willing to wait for no more than 2 seconds for a video to start playing, with each additional second adding 6% to the abandonment rate. 2) Users with good broadband connectivity expect faster video load times and are even more impatient than ones on mobile devices. 3) Users who experience video freezing watch fewer minutes of the video than someone who does not experience freezing. If a video freezes for 1% of its total play time, 5% less of its total play time is watched, on average. 4) Users who experience failures when they try to play videos are less likely to return to the same website in the future. Big data was analyzed (260+ million minutes of video) and some cool new data analysis techniques used."

I think that every engineer on planet earth should have -A mechanical pencil -A Protractor -An engineer's scale ( those three sided rulers) -Calipers - TI83/84 I'm not one of those old school flannel wearing engineers, I do most everything on a computer, but there is a lot of value in having a traditional drafting desk with tools like this, regardless of what type of engineering you do.

A house should be comfortable first.
Here are some things I suggest

-Double paned windows, soundproofing the outside walls (or possibly the walls around your offices/bedroom)
-Air filtration, humidity, and temperature control (vastly underrated for overall comfortabiliy of house)
-Heated toilet seats (trust me, you won't ever want to go back)

If all your comfort needs are already met, then here are my "fun" suggestions:

-Swimming pool
-Theatre room with projector, lazyboys, badass sound system of some sort
-Computer Closet with extender cables for monitor / peripherals routed out of it (no noise from fans is nice)

I wouldn't hardwire any cables, but having a conduit system is nice. Once you have it installed between your offices and computer closet, you can just pull the cables you need with a fish tape.

The whole "Video games make you violent" debate was squashed in the 90s. Lets leave it dead. I suggest that people who play xbox 360 are in general more pro military than most. I don't want to make a stereotype here, but we all know what the xbox stereotype is: a 16-24 year old "bro" who is libertarian, holds slightly sexist views, and is pro military. Maybe there is some truth in that stereotype.

WikiLeaks Losing Support From Anonymous 140

Hugh Pickens writes "The Guardian reports that members of computer hacker collective Anonymous have distanced themselves from WikiLeaks, claiming the whistleblowers' site has become too focused on the personal tribulations of its founder, Julian Assange. A statement linked from the Anonymous Twitter account, AnonymousIRC, described WikiLeaks as 'the one man Julian Assange show,' and complained that the website implemented a paywall seeking donations from users who wanted access to millions of leaked documents. 'The idea behind WikiLeaks was to provide the public with information that would otherwise be kept secret by industries and governments. Information we strongly believe the public has a right to know,' said the statement on behalf of Anonymous. The dispute could starve WikiLeaks of potentially newsworthy leaks in the future, as some of Wikileaks' recent disclosures – including the Stratfor emails – are alleged to have come from Anonymous."
