Submission + - Ask Slashdot: convention hall WiFi interference 2

bbowman writes: one of my job responsibilities is to set up the small network for our company's exhibit at the trade shows we attend. the mobile demo devices we use depend upon a reliable WiFi connection to a router I have in the exhibit. in the days leading up to the opening of the trade show, WiFi connections are reliable and work as expected. however as soon as the show opens none of our devices can reliable maintain a WiFi connection to the router. The devices we use at the trade shows are Windows-based laptops, iPods/iPads, Android tablets, and a variety of WiFi enabled cell phones. I have tried using channels 1, 6, and 11 (as well as the others) and used different routers (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear) without success. I'm sure it is likely that there are poorly insulated electrical cabling, fluorescent lighting, and other issues that would contribute to WiFi interference in the convention hall. A quick scan shows dozens and dozens of discoverable WiFi networks nearby.

If I take the router back to my hotel room, I have zero connection problems. How can I overcome this so that WiFi works reliably in the convention hall?

Submission + - Could PC Gaming Be Critical to Our Nation's Future (goozernation.com)

Mike Rohde writes: "A few weeks ago, Matt Ployhar of Intel wrote about the economic impact of video games and why it’s in the country’s best interest to have a bright gaming future. While there are several conversations over the past few years that have corroborated his position, nothing has hit home harder than a discussion he recently had with a major university that prides itself on its technology focus."

I'm not sure why we should immediately assume that GoDaddy will suck just because they were purchased by a private equity firm. GoDaddy had every intention of going public but choose not to because of how they would have had to report their earnings/recognize revenue. From what I remember they would essentially split the revenue of a domain registration out over the life of the domain registration as opposed to immediately upon payment.

GoDaddy is a cash cow that will likely continue to be a cash cow if they parent firm let's GoDaddy continue to operate in the manner they have done so since they were founded.

I'm not an investment equity firm but if I were I would look to maximize revenue over as long of a timeline as possible. GoDaddy has no real tangible assets to come in and suck dry like a large manufacture might so sucking the life out really doesn't make a lot of financial sense.

I've been happy with GoDaddy over the years and will continue to use them until their service slips or their prices get out of control.

I'm always distrustful of a large companies managing my music collection. What happens when they can't make a profit and shut the service down? At best I have to deal with retrieving my media, at worst I could potentially lose access to everything.

Most folks who read slashdot probably have all of the pieces they need to just build this service themselves. Broadband connected computer, iPhone or Android device, 3G or WiFi connection to the remote device or computer.

If you have a media server at home or just a computer running Windows, OSX or Linux why not consider running Subsonic (http://www.subsonic.org)? Using subsonic I can stream my media to any computer using the in browser player and I with a client for my iPhone (isubms) I can stream to my iPhone over 3G or Wifi.

I've been using this as my own personal Pandora radio in the car and it works great. The nice part about the client app for my iPhone is it can cache content for when I don't have 3G coverage.

The total cost for this project was about $20 bucks since I was already paying for broadband and 3G cellphone service. I bought the $10 euro streaming license for subsonic and the $4.99 iPhone app. If you have an Android phone your costs are even cheaper as I believe there is a free client app for Android devices.

This is the solution I've been looking for... For years!

I know I sound like an infomercial but no longer having to remember to sync my device and having my entire music collection at my finger tips where ever I am is awesome.

You have a couple of options.

1. Stop posting your photos on the Internet.
2. Do nothing and accept the exposure.
3. You can sue.

Like it or not but the legal system is probably the answer. Try to find a firm that will take on the case for free in exchange for a larger share of the profits. If you can't find a firm to take it on then reality is your work probably isn't worth any real money anyways so you should probably just accept the exposure and move on.

Or like I said earlier just stop posting your photos on the Internet.

To be honest how can anyone be surprised at this? When books were set free from paper and placed onto the Internet it was only a matter of time before authors decided to cut out the publisher. They no longer have a need for them. Publishers should get wise and start to provide real value to the authors. If I write a book and do not require your editing, marketing or printing services why exactly do you expect to keep 75% of the sale price?

Give it time and most large authors will just sell their ebooks directly via their own websites.

This is exactly what the Internet is supposed to be about. Giving the little guy the chance to eliminate the need for the big guy.

Cheers for these Authors!

They are lying threw their teeth if they say nothing unusual happened. I watched it on fold on my trading platform and it was like 1/2 the market just turned off while computerized trades relentlessly sold to the nonexistent buy side. In the end its likely that the only people who got hurt by this were retail investors who trade with stop-loss or trailing stop-loss orders. I have plenty of stocks that didn't drop more then 60% but most moved over 25% effectively stealing shares from every small investor who had trades execute that they probably never intended. Then many of these stocks recovered to only a few points down as the market makers walked everything back up.

Through a glitch/mistake (likely) or through a master organized plan (unlikely) the big financial players were able to shift around billions of dollars of wealth inside of 30 minutes.

The market needs a kill button that can go off automatically during drastic movement. The market should stay off for 30 to 60 minutes to ensure its functioning correctly. Then it can turn back on and repeat the cycle. If the market really needed to fall 1000 points it would still do it in a day but it would semi-controlled and because investors really believe it should go there.

Thursdays 1000 point drop was computer generated and it was absolute bullshit that cost retail investors dearly.

And for the record it didn't cost me much and I normally don't care about the average retail investor but even I have a soul and Thursday was 100% wrong and needs to be fixed.

If you were able to successfully complete a few projects before graduation they'll certainly become interesting talking points on your resume and help to set you a part from the other recent graduates. In a tough job market anything you can do helps plus you'll get a chance to see if you really want to work as a programmer without having to commit to a full time job. It will probably be one of the few times in your programming career where you get to pick and choose the projects you work on.

At the end of the day people need marketed to because they don't know where to go for the things they want/need. Google is positioning itself to do this directly with its overly large suite of products.

When businesses stop spending traditional advertising dollars they won't be able to bank them they'll just be forced to redirect them into Google.

Handsets, Buzz, GMAIL, Search engine data it all rolls up into a marketing profile so Google can predict what you're looking for. If Google can help get you to the right place and you buy something they will ultimately get a piece of the final sale.

Driving to work and need a coffee? Google has the data to get you to a Starbucks or a local Mom and Pop. Do you really think this will stay free for the businesses?
