Submission + - YouTube Hack Permitted 3rd-Party Deletion of Videos

Rambo Tribble writes: Russian hacker, Kamil Hismatullin, has demonstrated a hack which allowed him to delete any videos on the site, in short order. The hack reportedly exploited a weakness that allowed a spurious authentication token when placing a takedown request. Mr. Hismatullin reported the hack to Google, which fixed the bug within hours and gave Hismatullin a $5,000 reward. Before reporting the flaw, Kamil says "... [for a] couple of hours I've fought the urge to clean up Bieber's channel." Ah, what might have been. The BBC has good coverage.

Submission + - Cetaceans Found Able to Focus Sound in Echolocation

Rambo Tribble writes: A recent study from Denmark has determined that porpoises, dolphins and whales can focus the sounds they make, described as "clicks and buzzes", when hunting. This appears to exceed even the capabilities of bats. One researcher described the ability as, "like adjusting a flashlight". The BBC offers approachable, and illustrated coverage.

Submission + - Carly Fiorina Near Launching Presidential Bid 1

Rambo Tribble writes: Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina announced on Fox News Sunday that she stood a 'higher than 90 percent' chance of running as a presidential candidate in 2016. Fiorina's tenure at HP was marked by controversy over her leadership, and it is unclear what level of name recognition she enjoys. Her only previous political experience appears to be a failed U.S. Senate seat effort in 2010, as the Republican candidate challenging sitting Democrat Barbara Boxer, in California. Fiorina lost by 10%.

Submission + - U.S. Air Force Overstepped In SpaceX Certification

Rambo Tribble writes: An internal review commissioned by Air Force Secretary Deborah James has concluded that Air Force personnel tasked with evaluating SpaceX's certification treated as a design review, going so far as to dictate organizational changes in the company. This was judged contrary to the intention of promoting a competitive environment. The report, prepared by former Air Force Chief of Staff General Larry Welch concluded, "The result to date has been ... the worst of all worlds, pressing the Falcon 9 commercially oriented approach into a comfortable government mold that eliminates or significantly reduces the expected benefits to the government of the commercial approach. Both teams need to adjust."

Actually, you may be doing the feudal masters a bit of a disservice. While the feudal serf was his master's property, the lord of the fiefdom generally treated his serfs better than the industrialists who followed. It was common for the lord to provide his serfs free health care and several times more time off than even today's corporations provide their workers. Many of the common beliefs about feudal life are misconceptions bred by the industrialists to keep their workers complacent: "You have it so much better, now that I'm in charge," essentially. If you'd like to learn more I can recommend the series of videos named "Medieval Lives" with Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame.
