Look to the Reagan administration's "Star Wars" project. In fact, that was just the tip of the iceberg of funds misspent by that regime. After concocting outlandish scenarios of a Soviet arms buildup, admin wonks tasked the CIA with finding proof of such. The CIA came back with the observation that there was no such evidence. The administration successfully spun this as "proof" the Soviets were up to much worse than even the wonks' wildest claims, and allocated tens of billions of dollars to wasteful, unnecessary defence spending. The fall of the Soviet Union, and the release of Soviet documents, revealed the arms buildup to be a Reagan administration fantasy.

Submission + - YouTube Hack Permitted 3rd-Party Deletion of Videos

Rambo Tribble writes: Russian hacker, Kamil Hismatullin, has demonstrated a hack which allowed him to delete any videos on the site, in short order. The hack reportedly exploited a weakness that allowed a spurious authentication token when placing a takedown request. Mr. Hismatullin reported the hack to Google, which fixed the bug within hours and gave Hismatullin a $5,000 reward. Before reporting the flaw, Kamil says "... [for a] couple of hours I've fought the urge to clean up Bieber's channel." Ah, what might have been. The BBC has good coverage.

Submission + - Cetaceans Found Able to Focus Sound in Echolocation

This appears to exceed even the capabilities of bats. One researcher described the ability as, "like adjusting a flashlight". The BBC offers approachable, and illustrated coverage.

Submission + - Carly Fiorina Near Launching Presidential Bid 1

Rambo Tribble writes: Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina announced on Fox News Sunday that she stood a 'higher than 90 percent' chance of running as a presidential candidate in 2016. Fiorina's tenure at HP was marked by controversy over her leadership, and it is unclear what level of name recognition she enjoys. Her only previous political experience appears to be a failed U.S. Senate seat effort in 2010, as the Republican candidate challenging sitting Democrat Barbara Boxer, in California. Fiorina lost by 10%.
