These are generally very power-efficient "Dumbphones", normally Nokia makes low end stuff with awesome battery life. In places without power, quite a few villages will have a shop or charging station for the phones (not from Vanuatu, but a nearby country). Customers buy pre-pay credit and charge their phones at the same time. Phone accounts are being tied into billpayment systems and money sending (Western Union-ish) all over the pacific. But quite a lot of places have power, satellite TV and 3G internet, all enjoyed in a house with a mud floor.

Android User Spends 60 Days In WebOS Land 137

An anonymous reader writes "About six months ago, however, I began to wonder about how the other mobile products had grown. When the HTC HD7 crossed my path a little while ago, I decided to abandon my Nexus S and live among the Windows Phone folks for awhile. The experience was fun, but I eventually went back to my Nexus S. About a month later, I was presented with the opportunity to repeat the experiment, only this time with a Palm Pre Plus. With the HP Touchpad on its way, I wanted to get a feel for how WebOS worked, explore the differences, and take a look into the community that was still loyal to WebOS."

You mean like Obama? I couldn't agree more.

*facepalm* Look, whatever bad decisions Obama is making, he is eminently more qualified than Bush Jr. A higher IQ, a law degree, the ability to write a complete book, actually managing something that didn't run into the ground. All these are advantages Obama has over Bush, Palin, and whatever "average joe/jane" politicans coming out of the woodwork these days (Michelle Bachman? *shudder*).

So basically what you're saying is that they should have somehow predicted the future, and realized Amazon would strip the device filtering from their app, and built a second method of preventing this? If they did they'd be awesome, but the fact that they didn't DOESN'T make it their fault the apps crash, it makes it Amazon's! You seem to be very determined to paint them in a bad light... Are you the paranoid reviewer they were talking about?

Your comprehension is certainly not very good! The apps were crashing because Amazon wasn't filtering incompatible/poorly performing devices from downloading the app. You know, like the ones stated in their manifest file? The dev certainly give no indications either way whether they are bad or good to deal with, customer-to-seller, but I think being considerate of people whose android devices would not run this app seems to be a good sign of the dev's diligence. They wanted to reply so they could explain themselves, certainly not to do whatever you're talking about. Is a certain someone projecting their own baggage onto another situation?

Comment Re:Not much to see. (Score 1) 84

The problem this will solve, if implemented well, is basically cutting down on tech un-savvy users installing malware, and maybe for the rest of us, ease of updating, with a nice GUI. I think an app store should allow apps to be sold/downloaded easily, but certain apps can be scrutinized/audited, and given a certificate/badge of "goodness" that less technical users can use as a guide to what's safe to dowload. The rest of us will benefit from fewer botnet zombies pumping out spam and DDOS attacks, and friend/clients needing help!

I have to say "talent" is such a subjective term. What criteria are we alluding to when we mention the word "talent"? A singing voice capable of 5 octaves in range or maybe a more modest voice with better/subtler/whatever singing/rapping? Profound/meaningful/socialy relevant lyyrics, and/or the ability to perform songs live with heartbreaking conviction / amazing energy? A preference to a certain genre?

Well, I don't know what songs are included in that movie, but he co-wrote 24 out of the 31 songs on his "My Worlds: The Collection" album, some of which do have about 5 or 6 people, and some of which don't. I have only seen a few cases of a (primarily vocalist) solo r&b artist writing and composing their albums to the exclusion of most outside participation, and the last I could recall was Lauryn Hill, who did it deliberately to get all those Grammy's and shove them in Wyclef Jean's face... A lot of his songs are modified versions of what he used to sing on his youtube channel before his record deal. Check out kidrauhl on youtube, the kid's youtube channel. While he cartainly wasn't a world class songwriter, there were definitely signs of talent showing through. And, listening to MJ's "Ben" or "ABC", did that suggest "Thriller" or "insert your favourite song from his discography"? Some entertainers grow, and some fade away, we'll see it when we see it I suppose. What I will say is that, as ear worms go, his singles are like ear worms on crack... You know he wrote most of the music himself, can play two instruments, and can sing quite well? His music is awesome for his age and demographic. It might be fashionably non-conformist to criticize his music and fans, but cmon, they're just kids.... If he can write stuff like that now, there's a good indication he could be even better in his 20's and 30's (think Michael Jackson)
