Comment Re:Females? (Score 1) 173

The summary is talking about survey results, and uses both "male" and "female" equally, which are common language in surveys.

Please women -- we'd love to have more of you in our industry, but claiming gender insensitivity where there is none truly just makes men afraid to even interact with you, lest they be labelled misogynist and slammed all over social media.

Of course, we have miles to go when it comes to better respecting women in technology; but the article summary isn't one of them.

Please do -- Anaerin's mockup is SOOO much closer to what a Slashdot redesign should look like:

* 100% width
* Familiar green headings on comment's, which give Slashdot its distinctive "Slashdot" feel
* Possible to read nested comments

Although it still misses comment filtering, and the comments don't start until half-way down the page, it's a lot more promising than the current unusable-comment-section beta!

Stolen does not mean to deprive another of ownership, it means to take without permission.

And what does take mean? When your definition was penned, taking something clearly deprived the former possessor of ownership.

I'll concede that re-using the word "stolen" isn't a terrible choice for this new "take-a-copy" action, but let's not pretend that this is what its meant all along.

you can upload encrypted files anonymously to a server and download all the messages periodically. Whichever ones you can decrypt with your keys are addressed to you. It's very inefficient, but there's no way to figure out who got your messages without either seizing your computer or hacking it..

I like this idea, and think it can be made plenty efficient by decreasing the number of recipients that "share" a given inbox -- say 1000 users or so.

Submission + - DefundTheNSA - Call Congress About July 24th Vote (defundthensa.com)

Jah-Wren Ryel writes: It's been just over a month since the NSA’s dragnet surveillance program was leaked to the public. Tomorrow, Congress is voting on an amendment that would block funding for NSA programs that collect the call records of innocent Americans.

A win tomorrow may start a chain reaction — but it won't happen unless we speak up. We have one day to convince Congress to act.

Submission + - We're Number 9! U.S. Slips in Internet Speed Rankings

curtwoodward writes: The United States of America: The greatest country in the world, the last superpower, born of divine providence. Unless you're trying to connect to the Internet. The latest State of the Internet Report from network optimization company Akamai shows that the US has slipped in the global rankings of average connection speed, despite nearly 30 percent of yearly growth. That puts ol' Uncle Sam behind such economic powerhouses as Latvia and the Czech Republic. Oh, and we pay more, too. Is it finally time to shake up the ISP market and make Internet connections a public utility, on par with electricity and water? Or will edge projects like Google Fiber make a dent soon?

Hahaha.. I love statements like this.

How about a craft with mile-wide wings that unfold at altitude? How about solar power being beamed to the craft from a ground or satellite system (still qualified as solar powered in my book)? The old adage "never say never" exists for a reason.

Surely, with the right processing, a more accurate model could be constructed of a fetus/internal organs from these units?

Definitely an interesting possibility for a Tricorder.

3D ultrasounds are already being done, in real time. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_ultrasound -- we had one of these done. It mathematically combines the 2D images into a 3D representation. Building a full 3D model (internal and out) of the fetus seems very plausible.

While I found the 3D view extremely helpful (and it makes great printouts for the folks!), interestingly the ultrasound tech could "see" much better in the traditional 2D ultrasound view that looks like a fuzzy blur to non-techs. A big part of this besides her obvious training/experience was that the framerate of the 2D view was much higher.
