Comment Rebranding the Nazis as Leftists (Score 0) 550

"There is simply no way to assign a "national socialist worker's party" to the "right wing" within any political spectrum other than that of Europe, where everybody is so far left that a socialist can be to their right."

This kind of lying about history, or worse, genuine ignorance, is truly scary. Such a statement is like spitting on the graves of all the Allied soldiers who died in WW2. You should be ashamed.

"Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it." I've never believed that phrase as much as I do now, reading your Glen Beck inspired nonsense. The ignorance required to make such an outlandish claim acceptable in the public sphere is truly revolting. The thing is that with a big lie, if you repeat it enough... (on Fox News)...

Comment Primary System (Score 2) 550

My father, who is American (not me though, technically yes, but I don't live there, and it seems like a crazy place I wouldn't want to stay for all that long), thinks the Primary system makes the USA more democratic. I'm not so sure. Seems to me like a weird way for the 2 "parties" to be completely inescapable.

In Canada, when we have a terrible political party because it gets too corrupt from being in power, eventually that party gets dumped and those with that ideology have to form a new party that must embody the ideals but not the old vices. It's not perfect but it seems light-years ahead of the US 2 party system. In the US the bad old stuff just never dies all the way back to slavery.

I support the makers of this app. All they are doing is putting to use what is already out there. If we don't want those records so public we should make the change so the records aren't public that way. In a way they are highlighting a problem that needs to be solved.

Comment split focus (Score 1) 218

I think it has to do with the fact that as we mature we can focus our mind on several things at once. Useful, mature and sophisticated. The brain does in fact improve into middle age, youth fetishism notwithstanding. However the trade off is that memories we produce are less intense. Life is more fuzzy as our brain constantly is aware of the issue of balance rather than diving in whole hog headfirst. Youth and age both have their various benefits.

Let's see. Colorado massacre happens Friday late.

By Saturday morning, the first editorials calling for more gun control appeared.

Yesterday, Obama called for more gun control (admittedly, he was pandering to his base, since the "more gun control" he said we needed have been existing law for 40 years or so)....

The voices are loud and fast advocating for gun control because it is an obvious need and it is upsetting to still not have it after so many decades when it was also very obvious. However, even you admit that the political will to make any of it happen isn't there. Obama and other politicians only call for this sort of thing in a toothless way.

Big Money NRA prevents sensible debate and progress - since you were a kid. The NRA takes really extreme positions. They do not represent the majority of their members even! They only succeed because armchair quarterbacks like to take extreme hypothetical positions instead of looking at the real facts.

If you really support responsible gun use you should quit the NRA and form a better organisation that actually represents its members and doesn't actively work against responsible gun use.

Comment The Real NRA (Score 1) 846

There is a lot of rose tinted glasses and not seeing the sheep for the wolf clothing with the NRA. The NRA is very extreme and surveys of NRA members always result in much more moderate and responsible ideas of gun use than the NRA actually advocates. Just because YOU don't support shooting people/stand-your-ground etc doesn't mean the NRA backs you. Most members have a very distant idea of the policies the NRA puts into law and if they knew it better they would quit their membership!

Comment NRA are extremists (Score 1) 846

The NRA is actually an extremist organisation that does NOT represent its membership. Look up their actual positions. Most gun owners/advocates favour responsible gun ownership whereas the NRA advocates a dangerous free-for-all approach that encourages more violent weapons and makes responsible use (like hunting) less practical. Gun owners need to start an new organisation that is not bought and sold big brother corporation owned.

Let's fork it back into Google Labs! I don't care it it's made a little more technically demanding to setup.

Google should be nationalised and all the code put GPL so that we can fork things we need and they don't have to try and "monetize" away all usefulness.

Well said.

Plenty of old people use iGoogle. I use it too. I am quite annoyed by this. I don't want to have a home page for each computer or customise apps or whatever. I guess I'll have to make my own but it won't interface as well with all the Google products. Which will mean I will use google less. This seems like a bad decision. They should reverse it.
