Anyone who has a hand impairment like a quadriplegic or has studied hand movement knows that full wrist articulation is paramount. The wrist can even expand and contract some atrophied hand and forearm muscles so that fingers partly open and close.

Even if this isn't their newest video, what it shows is sadly they don't understand fundamental hand/wrist finger interaction.

I suppose this is not a robotic related rant ... but the sense of touch is still missing here and that seems lacking in the restorative efforts of researchers.

Submission + - What sci-fi book should my girlfriend read? 2

An anonymous reader writes: Like probably a lot of Slashdotters, I love reading science-fiction. Surprisingly, my very cute girlfriend has expressed an interest in also wanting to read science-fiction. However, I'm worried that I'll give her something too complicated/weird, turning her off of sci-fi for good.
What is a good science fiction book for her to get started with?

Submission + - Chinese pirates launch Ubuntu that looks like XP (downloadsquad.com) 1

Anonymous Coward writes: "Just as the title suggests: Ylmf, famous for pirating Windows XP, have just released a version of Ubuntu that looks JUST like Windows XP. Really, really similar. Apparently because Microsoft were cracking down on the actual Windows XP pirating — though, I think they will still suffer for ripping off the GUI _exactly_."

Submission + - If we all used computers to watch TV... (zona-m.net)

MarcoF writes: Here in Italy there is a lot of noise these days about the switch from analog to digital TV, which is... the same old, dumb, trashy thing, just digital. Last week I used a real declaration of an Italian Minister and the answer from a journalist (see the Fine Article) as an example of what could happen if everybody, not just geeks, stopped to bother about digital TV decoders in and by themselves, and started to hook them to computers instead of TVs. Is what I suggest in that article (software used to check from home what politician say, in real time from official sources!) already happening somewhere, on a scale large enough to have already made a difference? I would also like to see mockups like the one I included in the article, made from real TV shows from other countries. to prove how general the suggestion is.

As to whether to believe the better than average self-reported BMI and exercise numbers from the women in the survey? What, women misrepresent their weight online? Unheard of!

Girl Gamers More Hardcore Than Guys 284

TheClockworkSoul writes "Scientific American reports on a study published this month in the Journal of Communication, which found that women who engage in a role-playing game online actually commit more time on average than the male players do. The authors surveyed 7,000 players logged in to EverQuest II (PDF), and found that the average age of the gamers surveyed was 31, and that playing time tended to increase with age. Interestingly, however, the female gamers not only tended to log more time online (29 hours per week versus 25 for the males), but were also more likely to lie about how much they really play."

The modems are layer 2 and below devices. They don't know or care.

Routers are the real problem as far as customer premise equipment goes; however, the relevant functionality is typically in software on most consumer routers. Ostensibly this means that manufacturers can release a firmware upgrade.

I find that the turnover on those router boxes is rather high, so I suspect that newer routers will ship with it and the problem will slowly go away.

Buy support. Pay for your Linux licenses. Just because it's open source doesn't mean that you should pay $0.

By buying from a legitimate open source company, you help reinforce the open source eco-system.

And it's all legitimate: it's not a donation, so your boss shouldn't object. You are still saving a lot of money compared to buying a proprietary solution, but you are helping people who code full-time sustain themselves. Let's face it, developers are the critical resource for most open source projects.

PS: some cool startups are looking for extra developers/founders: help people go solar, build a better bug collector tool, or help build a music community that supports its bands.

This is true. But you're going to get about a dozen replies from MS-bashers who are going to argue that, in this one particular case, patent-trolling is okay (because it hurts MS). These same guys will then promptly scream bloody murder if the same company sues Apple or an OSS developer for patent infringement.

Even considering he's storing the DOM which is basically a set of empty containers for js, document head, document body, css objects etc., why in fucks name does it take 350 meg ???
