Another implementation would be to encrypt each item with a unique key and destroy the keys, rather than the underlying item, in a delete event, such that not even forensic tools would have a reasonable chance at recovery once the key-storage media has been re-written.

Then you'll need cold storage for all those keys you never use. Which, of course, can't be deleted unless they're encrypted with yet more keys, which will themselves need cold storage, so you have to....

Submission + - Pew Survey Documents Gaps Between Public and Scientists

PvtVoid writes: A new Pew Research Study documents an alarming gap between public perception of scientific issues and the opinions of the scientists themselves, as measured by a poll of AAAS scientists. Even worse, the gap is partisan, with clear differences between Republicans and Democrats, and between conservatives and liberals. For example, while 98% of AAAS members agree with the statement that "Human beings and other living things have evolved over time", only 21% of conservatives agree, compared with 54% of liberals. Global warming, similarly, shows an ideological gap: 98% of AAAS scientists agreed with the statement that "the Earth is getting warmer mostly due to human activity", compared with 21% of conservatives and 54% of liberals. Encouragingly, almost everybody thinks childhood vaccines should be required (86% of AAAS members, 65% of conservatives, and 74% of liberals.)

Submission + - Google apologises for Photos app's racist blunder

mrspoonsi writes: Google says it is "appalled" that its new Photos app mistakenly labelled a black couple as being "gorillas". Its product automatically tags uploaded pictures using its own artificial intelligence software. The error was brought to its attention by a New York-based software developer who was one of the people pictured in the photos involved. Google was later criticised on social media because of the label's racist connotations. "This is 100% not OK," acknowledged Google executive Yonatan Zunger after being contacted by Jacky Alcine via Twitter. "[It was] high on my list of bugs you 'never' want to see happen." Mr Zunger said Google had already taken steps to avoid others experiencing a similar mistake.

And the hypersensitivity of people these days is just ridiculous - especially when they aren't even in the group being "insulted". I find myself just not making jokes and making the most banal conversation now because of fear of pissing off an idiot and getting screamed at or shot. For example, back when that whole bullshit of those pizza place people not wanting to serve gay people, I didn't think it was a big deal - I DIDN'T say it was right, btw. But fucking A, I got screamed at by a straight person for being a bigot, and god forbid when I posted something like that on Reddit, I got voted down into oblivion. That couldn't have possibly have been from gay people because they are a very very very small minority. It was all sanctimonious bullies.

And I think that is where a lot of this PC backlash is originating from: sanctimonious bullies.

Self-aware much?

The flag we're talking about was created to boost morale of the soldiers, and was only for use in battle.

But the soldiers were fighting to preserve a system of hatred, slavery, bigotry, and treason. Many of my ancestors among them. Thankfully, they lost. I don't honor the cause of my ancestors, and I am flabbergasted that anybody would.
