Yup - look at the "Green Line" in Los Angeles... Goes up to one miles from LAX... AND STOPS. THEN you have to take a taxi and/or bus. Period. (unless you wish to hike a mile with luggage/family in tow). It's all politics. (Kind of unrelated to the original post about photographing it, but related to some of the feedback). The Green Line was STOPPED from going all the way to the airports by taxi unions, primarily. The bus service kind of already existed, but only runs every hour or so. When I fly out of Fort Lauderdale, I take the "Tri-Rail" up there, which, granted, the station is over a mile from the airport, but the "Tri-Rail" used EXISTING tracks when it went into service, and the bus that takes you (for FREE) to the airport, runs about every 10-15 minutes. (btw, it's a "full sized" train, so it'd be a little more difficult to "extend" to the airport, when it continues on for another 100 miles or so, than it would be to make a NEW construction, like the Green Line in L.A., to go straight to the airport)

Comment Well.... (Score 2, Interesting) 601

Living in Miami, the Metro-Fail (er, Rail), is pretty much worthless anyway. It doesn't go to the airport, or, for the matter, anywhere else useful. It's long been said, the Metro-Rail was built so the people in the Kendall area (southern point) could go up to north Miami (northern point) to buy drugs - and for the most part, I still agree (though, personally, don't do drugs). Regardless, look up WHERE the Metro in Miami goes. It's one of the worst designed rail systems in the WORLD (well, ok, L.A.'s isn't much better - another failure that somehow doesn't go to the airport).

Don't install 10.1 if you have even a slightly older video card. I'm running a Core2Duo with 4gb, my video card is a nVidia 9600GSO (about a year old!). Flash 10.1 causes green artifacts with online Flash playback now (10 didn't).

Even their release notes say they "fixed green artifact on some video cards". Apparently, they didn't fix it on others. No convenient way to "roll-back" to 10, either.

Flash 10.1 is Yi Da Tuo Da Bian. (words from FIREFLY - look it up :) )

Anti-Speed Camera Activist Buys Police Department's Web Domain Screenshot-sm 680

Brian McCrary just bought a website to complain about a $90 speeding ticket he received from the Bluff City PD — the Bluff City Police Department site. The department let its domain expire and McCrary was quick to pick it up. From the article: "Brian McCrary found the perfect venue to gripe about a $90 speeding ticket when he went to the Bluff City Police Department's website, saw that its domain name was about to expire, and bought it right out from under the city's nose. Now that McCrary is the proud owner of the site, bluffcitypd.com, the Gray, Tenn., computer network designer has been using it to post links about speed cameras — like the one on US Highway 11E that caught him — and how people don't like them."

"Argonaut" Octopus Sucks Air Into Shell As Ballast 72

audiovideodisco writes "Even among octopuses, the Argonaut must be one of the coolest. It gets its nickname — 'paper nautilus' — from the fragile shell the female assembles around herself after mating with the tiny male (whose tentacle/penis breaks off and remains in the female). For millennia, people have wondered what the shell was for; Aristotle thought the octopus used it as a boat and its tentacles as oars and sails. Now scientists who managed to study Argonauts in the wild confirm a different hypothesis: that the octopus sucks air into its shell and uses it for ballast as it weaves its way through the ocean like a tiny submarine. The researchers' beautiful video and photographs show just how the Argonaut pulls off this trick. The regular (non-paper) nautilus also uses its shell for ballast, but the distant relationship between it and all octopuses suggests this is a case of convergent evolution."

OLED Film Could Provide Cheap Night Vision For Cars 120

thecarchik writes "Night vision systems are already available in the higher-end luxury sedans from companies like Toyota, Volvo, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. It's expensive technology that few drivers can afford, and at $4,000 for the system without a display, it's a pricey upgrade. That may all change soon, as DARPA-funded scientists have developed a cheap way to turn any infrared light into visible light with a thin film."

New Europe-Wide Radio Telescope To Look For ET 49

astroengine writes "A new radio telescope is under construction, consisting of 44 stations (each consisting of several antennae) spread across Europe. The pan-European Low Frequency Array is half built and already returning unprecedented observations of cosmic radio sources. The best thing is, when it's complete, SETI will be able to use the array to seek out transmitting extraterrestrial civilizations in these untapped low radio frequencies."

Apple Removes Wi-Fi Finders From App Store 461

jasonbrown writes "Apple on Thursday began removing another category of apps from its iPhone App Store. This time, it's not porn, it's Wi-Fi. Apple removed several Wi-Fi apps commonly referred to as stumblers, or apps that seek out available Wi-Fi networks near your location. According to a story on Cult of Mac, apps removed by Apple include WiFi-Where, WiFiFoFum, and yFy Network Finder."

Patent Markings May Spell Trouble For Activision 82

eldavojohn writes "If you pick up your copy of Guitar Hero and read the literature, you'll notice it says 'patent pending' and cites a number of patents. A group alleges no such patent pends nor are some of the patents applicable. If a judge finds Activision guilty of misleading the public in this manner, they could become liable for up to $500 per product sold under false patent marking. The patents in question seem to be legitimately Guitar Hero-oriented, and little is to be found about the mysterious group. The final piece of the puzzle puts the filing in Texas Northern District Court, which might be close enough to Texas Eastern District Court to write this off as a new kind of 'false patent marking troll' targeting big fish with deep coffers."
