I have an epic. Your post is bunk. I get 24 hours battery life regular. No gps issues, no random turning off. Wifi battery life is better than 3g, if on 3g i only get about 18-20 hours battery life.
Every review says the galaxy S gps issue did not apply to the epic.
Great phone, though I don't believe that 24 hours is acceptable battery life. I could probably get more if I turned of a lot of the bg syncing, but then what's the point?

Casual encoutners wasn't nearly as overrun (so I hear) before the adult services section came about, because in adult services you had to pay to post. Spammers, most just moved to the free portions. Whats not being said is how stupid this is! For adult services you had an audit trail -- a credit card -- that could be tracked to each post. Now kill that and you mvoe them to the non paid sites where you lose that bit of identification.

Perhaps this book might be useful for a high school tech club/class. I mean there already are many $200 linux computers: netbooks. I would have liked the book in HS, it would have saved me countless hours of windows reinstallation, and cursing at BSODs. (I'm now a stress free Ubuntu and Mac User).

Everyone else, the transition to Ubuntu isn't that hard, but is a learning curve. Why would one want to add building a machine to the mix? Besides by the time the ink is dry I'm sure the hardware suggestions will be out of date.

Submission + - NYC Drops $722M on CityTime Attendance System 1

theodp writes: New York City is reportedly paying 230 consultants an average annual salary of $400K for a computer project that is seven years behind schedule and vastly over budget. The payments continue despite Mayor Bloomberg's admission the computerized timekeeping and payroll system — dubbed CityTime — is 'a disaster.' Eleven CityTime consultants rake in more than $600K annually, with three of them making as much as $676,000. The 40 highest-paid people on the project bill taxpayers at least $500K a year. Some of the consultants have been working at these rates for as long as a decade.

Submission + - Google Hackers Had Ability to Alter Source Code (wired.com)

ub3r n3u7r4l1st writes: Hackers who breached Google and other companies in January targeted source-code management systems, security firm McAfee asserted Wednesday. They manipulated a little-known trove of security flaws that would allow easy unauthorized access to the intellectual property the system is meant to protect.

The software-management systems, widely used at businesses unaware that the holes exist, were exploited by the Aurora hackers in a way that would have enabled them to siphon source code, as well as modify it to make customers of the software vulnerable to attack. It’s akin to making yourself a set of keys in advance for locks that are going to be sold far and wide.

HandBrake Abandons DivX As an Output Format 619

An anonymous reader writes "DivX was the first digital video format to really win mainstream acceptance, doing for movies what MP3 did for music (both good and bad). Eventually even Sony, the king of proprietary formats, caved into pressure and added DivX support to its DVD players and the PlayStation 3. Now HandBrake's developers have made an interesting choice for version 0.9.4 — they ditched support for AVI files using DivX and XviD. Your only option now is to convert DVDs and other media to MKV or MP4 files, with the option to save as Apple-friendly M4V files. So why is HandBrake ditching AVI and XviD support when it's a format that's won such widespread acceptance? In the words of the developers, 'AVI is a rough beast. It is obsolete.'"
