Submission + - Raspberry Pi Stampede - sold out in 2hrs! (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: Who could have guessed that a cheap ARM bare board computer could attract so much attention. The demand for the Raspberry Pi model B was so great that it crashed the servers of its two retailers — Farnell and RS Components — and sold out in 2 hours.
Although aimed at the education market it seems unlikely that the stampede has been caused by wannabe programmers. It seems more likely that people have projects in mind or simply want to tinker with hardware cheap enough to be disposable.
It seems we still have a huge appetite for low cost capable hardware.

Submission + - Google Eying Vision Tracking For Glasses?

bostonidealist writes: Google has been using eye tracking technology in internal product testing for years. Given the company's plans to release electronic glasses by year's end, is it possible that Google intends to include electrooculography (EOG) sensors in the product, such as those demonstrated in this prototype from ETH Zürich? A refined integration of EOG, machine vision, and wireless technologies could allow wearers to manipulate real world objects just by staring at them.

I can't say about the poll tax riots (because frankly, I don't have the energy to look them up), but the students fees are about immature people rioting over being forced to be more financially responsible for themselves instead of forcing others to pay their bills, and the war has nothing to do with people's right - so I'm really not sure what your point was. Maybe your point was that they love to riot, just not over things that actually relate to a tyrannical government that constantly takes away more and more freedom?

And yet Scottish students still get free university education, at the British taxpayers' expense of course.

If you get really bad withdrawal symptoms (which in the case of heroin could potentially kill you), taking the vaccine means that you can't even have a little bit to alleviate the symptoms and cut down. I would also assume that it affects methadone too which, again, means suffering from withdrawal.

Submission + - Turing's Biological Pattern Theory Proved (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: In Alan Turing's Centenary Year, a team of researchers from King's College London is investigating one of his less-well known hypotheses and have demonstrated his theory of morphogenesis which has implications for future stem cell research.
Turing, in 1951, invented a clever chemical scheme that would create a range of biological looking patterns using nothing but a two component chemical reaction.
The research provides experimental evidence confirming that two "morphogens", reacting as described by Turing, are responsible for the regularly spaced ridges found in the roof of the mouth of mice.
The specific morphogens involved are – FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor) and Shh (Sonic Hedgehog – so-called because laboratory fruit flies lacking the fly version have extra bristles on their bodies). They showed that when these morphogens' activity is increased or decreased, the pattern of the ridges in the mouth palate are affected in ways predicted by Turing's equations. For the first time the actual morphogens involved in this process have been identified and the team saw the effects predicted by Turing's 60-year-old speculative theory.
The only problem is that the paper reporting the results is behind the Nature Gennetics paywall.

He could be a flash in the pan like the BSB, develop into a musician with real staying power like the Beatles... He could even change the music world one day. 50 years from now people could talk about him like they do Bach, or never know who he was.

Oh God I fucking hope not!
