He was definatley working himself up to live his fantasies and he definately should have been convicted for misuse of the law enforcement database and anything else that could have stuck. Conspiracy to kidnap and murder.. they almost had enough for that but even given that he talked about his intent and purchased implements for a kill that probably shouldn't be enough to convict. Misleading slashdot headline though. This guy was almost certainly preparing for a kill and actively hunting he just hadn't settled on a target yet.

I have to agree. Trying to make a wearable device pretend to be something it isn't and conform to a 19th and 20th century form factor seems silly. I know it sounds a little nerdy but a small unobtrusive 16:9 flexible display on the bottom of your forearm would be a better solution than a watch. Maybe a small near invisible projector HUD display for people who wear glasses. There's lots of cool wearable stuff you could do and do stylishly... I just don't get these pretend watches that are never going to look right on half the population with smaller wrists.

That is one of the reasons I hate DAs and prosecutors in general. They will pursue charges they know are completely unreasonable compared to the offense for no other reason than scare the hell out of someone making them face their lives being ruined if they attempt to state a case for their innocence in court. They bully people into plea deals every day. This should be illegal. If they are not prosecuting the crime in good faith they have no business representing the publich in such a powerful role.

You'd basically be arguing then that it is impossible to legally do this over the internet or in fact to store anything for a user that they have a right to on the net. It's not like anyone allocates a unique physical machine anymore. Everything is virtualized and of course they have multiple users using the same switches and the packets are traveling over shared fiber and wire... Aereo transcoded every customer's stream separately though I imagine the same hardware handled the transcoding of all those streams. If you say that isn't legal though then what about Amazon Web Services ( http://aws.amazon.com/elastict... )? They are a cloud solution that is used for transcoding in the same way.

I actually agree with you but if you are going outside the law with the understanding that "the law is equal to justice" is basically a lie we tell ourselves to allow us to function as a society then you have to accept that when caught, you are to be treated as a criminal regardless of the morality of your actions. Even setting that aside, while I'm usually pretty sympathetic to vigilantes (with the exeption of mobs) this guy put other peoples lives in danger.

Harley is working to expand their appeal given that their customer base is getting steadily older. Thats the reason for the new 500 and 750 water cooled base models coming out. They aren't going to do everything right and perhaps will mostly make mistakes but I appreciate that they are at least making an effort and as long as they acknowledge the mistakes and double-down on the successes I think they might be ok. I've always liked their bikes... I just couldn't justify the price and I hate the style-first clothing store feel of their dealerships.

Boycotts and such never really work though. Telling someone they shouldn't buy an inexpensive product that does the job because of some idealistic notion or other is never going to sway enough people. What will change China is the Chinese. As they become more affluent they will also be growing up in cities with horrible just ... horrible pollution. It will begin to impact health and then their government will begin to respond. They also won't be able to artificially keep the yuan down relative to other currencies forever as they continue to grow. Products will slowly continue become more expensive.

In all seriousness... modern diet and lifestyle. Pre-agriculture man was tall and healthy compared to the little people that populated the world prior to the mid 20th century. Well, the ones that lived. Take a look at some of the early french paintings with plains indians and frenchmen in the same scene. It's pretty laughable. Europeans looked like stunted children next to them.
