Square Enix Announces Supreme Commander 2 70

arcticstoat writes "Supreme Commander 2 has now been officially announced, but with a surprise publishing partner on board — Square Enix. Gas Powered Games' original RTS game and its expansion pack, Forged Alliance, were published by THQ, who is no stranger to the RTS genre, but Square Enix has previously specialized in Japanese RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Explaining the move, Square Enix said in a statement that it 'has previously worked exclusively with Japanese development companies, so the decision to form strategic partnerships with developers located outside of Japan serves as a new cornerstone of its strategy to create games targeted primarily at consumers in Europe and North America. Additionally, Square Enix Group's foray into the real-time strategy genre is a significant expansion of its product lineup.'"

MrKaos writes: Western digital seems to be preparing itself for the onslaught of SSD drives affecting it's market by developing a 20,000 rpm hard drive. Similar to the Velociraptor line of drives, the new drives seem to be offering lower capacity as a trade off for higher seek and write times. Looks like the battle lines are drawn for a new series of development in the mass storage front.

Wal-Mart Closes Online Movie Download Service 136

eldavojohn writes "A year after opening its movie download service, Wal-Mart has abandoned the endeavor. They claim this is a result of HP's decision to stop supporting its video download store software. The article also notes that, unlike iTunes, Wal-Mart offered variable pricing which attracted a lot of studios. 'The world's largest retailer instead turned its rental service over to Netflix Inc. Wal-Mart still operates a music download service and continues to sell CDs and DVDs at retail stores and over the Internet for shipping by mail.' Is this evidence of the strength of unified pricing in media downloads or just another company being squished by the giant Netflix & Apple?"

Nathan Wiering writes: "Wal-Mart Scams millions. By: Nathan Wiering. Every year after Christmas thousands of shoppers return to the store to return items but this is not the only reason people return to the stores. There are also many people that go to the stores to purchase something with the gift card they received for Christmas. Today Wal-Mart's Gift card system went down in the early morning hours. I called around trying to get the exact time, but I was told they didn't know exactly when the system had gone down only that it had been down all day nation-wide. Customers that came shopping at Wal-Mart with their gift cards weren't able to use the cards. Instead they had to either use another payment method or leave without the items that had just spent valuable time gathering. A majority of the people simply paid by another method, because they didn't want to spend all the time shopping a second time, figuring they would use the gift card for some other products. When I called around I also asked when the system was expected to be back up. I was told they didn't know when the system would be back up. On the Wal-Mart website there was no mention of the outage which seems strange because the system went down nation-wide. Is this just bad timing for all the people shopping with their gift cards on the day when the most gift cards are used, or is it a well planned scam made to earn Wal-Mart millions. I can't say for certain, but the facts point to a well planned scam. Whether a scam or not, this could possibly double Wal-Mart's after Christmas gift-card sales."
