I wonder if you could design this in a way that didn't use any energy (post construction)... using ocean water (which is ostensibly cooler than the sand) and using the force of the waves, or tidal pressure to move it through the pipes.

Perhaps most simply, couldn't you fill an underground tank during high tide, and then during low tide just let the cool water leak slowly through the pipes, and then out into the ocean?

Ask Blizzard Employees About Things That Matter 504

In just a few days, some of us will be making the trek to this year's Blizzcon event in Anaheim, CA. In addition to the interesting announcements, sneak peeks, and other distractions, we will be sitting down with several Blizzard employees to answer any questions you might have. So far we have scheduled some time with Chris Sigaty, lead producer on StarCraft II; Jeffrey Kaplan (aka Tigole), game director for World of Warcraft; Leonard Boyarsky, lead world designer on Diablo III; and Paul Sams, Blizzard COO. Please address your questions to one (or several) of these candidates and try to keep them civil and on topic. Questions about Diablo III's art style will most likely be omitted since we have limited time and that dead horse has already been beaten into submission. The usual Slashdot interview rules apply, but beyond that, the sky is the limit.

Journal Journal: Thoughts on the Holy Trinity 50

If you are familiar with Christianity and the Bible, you know that Christians are monodeists who beleive that God is a trinity of the Father (Jehovah, Elohim), Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. Some people have had trouble understanding how God can be made up of three parts. In Bible study last night, we were talking about how the Bible says, "Let us make man in our image", and how this was referring to the Trinity. As I was driving to work this morning, I was contemplating t

The numeric keypad allows for faster entry of lots of numbers. If you're entering a column of numbers into a spreadsheet, it's much easier to use the numeric keypad than it is to peck along the top of the keyboard.

If your work never requires you to type lots of numbers, you're right, there's probably no need.

Journal Journal: Reader Questions 3

On Lawn gave me an idea with this post. So, if anyone would like to submit a question or topic for discussion during the break, deobfuscate the email address and send it to us. We will post it as a JE and let the readers discuss it.

Thanks,

Journal Journal: Taking a break... 19

Well guys, we turned out 3 pretty good topics I think. Eugene said before the last topic that he though he should take a break. GLH and I have both been very busy also, and I think it is better that we don't try to do any more topics until after the first of the year. Most of you are busy also and really won't have time to read and do the research that many of you do when preparing your comments.

...then don't read it. Those of us that know better will "waste" our time on it, and it doesn't harm you in the least. The foes of friends thing only works if you add this account as a friend. If you don't choose to do so, it won't affect you. All of these things we are doing are offered as choices, we are forcing no one to do anything they do not wish to. If someone wishes to read the trolls, all they have to do is change the foe of friend modifier, or not log in. We just know that some trolls have a tendency to use foul language, and offer our readers a way to filter it.

BTW - Unproductivity is not a word (check dictionary.com.) I think the word you were searching for was unproductiveness.
