Comment Re:OS/2 Warp Clone (Score 1) 179

osFree (http://www.osfree.org/) was having a god moment some years ago, but sadly we lack developers to continue the project.

What I think that it will be interesting is trying to clone the close source components that runs on top of OS/2 Warp like WPS, SOM and PM.
- Presentation Manager - http://www.osfree.org/
- SOM - https://sourceforge.net/projec...
- WPS - XWorkplace and other OSS WPS classes

I think we should focus first in only one component that can run over OS/2 Warp 4.5x or eCS to later continue and gain momentum for the rest.

The community stills hangs out at http://www.os2world.com/

There is a OEM version of OS/2 called eComStation, which has ACPI, AHCI and some updated drivers to run on newer hardware. But it is not like the company behind eCS covers all the needs for the platform and community.

I think that OS/2 also deserves a shot on trying to be cloned and have an opportunity in the open source community. Sadly we don't have the resources to do this, but we need to build up a team of interested developers and supporters to do this.

Submission + - Lenovo buys IBM's x86 server business (reuters.com)

Comment Better keyboard standarization (Score 1) 459

It will be great if all keyboard can have the exact number of key everywhere. And only change the position of the characters according the language, but all have the same number and sizes of keys. Ex: Latin America has a big "enter" key, which in the US is smaller, because the US has a extra key over the "enter" key. I don't care which layout is better, but it will be great to have the same keyboard keys size everywhere.

There is also a nag that Spain has a different kind of keyboard of Spanish Latin America. Why they don't just merge it together to single one :)

Submission + - eComStation 2.2 Beta 5 Live CD (ecomstation.com)

An anonymous reader writes: There is available a new version of eComStaiton 2.2 Beta Live CD (Beta 5). It can be downloaded after a free registration. . eComStation is an OEM version of IBM's OS/2 Warp, it bundles new drivers for USB, ACPI, AHCI and include some extra network adapter. Plus it includes several open source software created/ported to that platform. eComStation is not free software, but the demo live CD is available for free. The OS/2 and eComStation community hang out on OS2World.com and they community keeps working on porting more open source software and replacing IBM's close source components.

Submission + - Apple Rejecting Bitcoin Apps

mrspoonsi writes: Techcrunch: Over the past couple of months, there have been a few Bitcoin app rejections by Apple that have made some waves. First, the venture-backed startup Coinbase had its app removed entirely from the App Store. Rob Banagale, writes in a blog post about the rejection for Gliph, a peer-to-peer messaging and payments app. The rejection, Banagale notes, was based largely off of section 22.1 of Apple’s App Store review guidelines. The rule states that “apps must comply with all legal requirements in any location where they are made available to users. It is the developer’s obligation to understand and conform to all local laws.” Bitcoin is not illegal, but it is also not legally recognized by governments as a currency. This gray area is what is leading Apple to reject Bitcoin-transaction apps.

Even that I had my problems with lenovo (Thinkpad Tablet bootloader locked). I think that the Thinkpad brand is still a good choice.

Something that I really like from the technical point of view is that they always (almost) publish the "Hardware Maintenance Guide", so you know exactly how to disassembly the machines to add more card, replace screen, change/update hdd and RAM.
