Justice Not As Blind As Previously Thought 256

NotSoHeavyD3 writes "I doubt this is much of a surprise but apparently Cornell University did a study that seems to show you're more likely to get convicted if you're ugly. From the article: 'According to a Cornell University study, unattractive defendants are 22 percent more likely to be convicted than good-looking ones. And the unattractive also get slapped with harsher sentences — an average of 22 months longer in prison.'"

Texas Schools Board Rewriting US History 1238

suraj.sun picked up a Guardian (UK) piece on the Texas school board and their quest to remake US education in a pro-American, Christian, free enterprise mode. We've been keeping an eye on this story for some time, as it will have an impact far beyond Texas. From the Guardian: "The board is to vote on a sweeping purge of alleged liberal bias in Texas school textbooks in favor of what Dunbar says really matters: a belief in America as a nation chosen by God as a beacon to the world, and free enterprise as the cornerstone of liberty and democracy. ... Those corrections have prompted a blizzard of accusations of rewriting history and indoctrinating children by promoting right-wing views on religion, economics, and guns while diminishing the science of evolution, the civil rights movement, and the horrors of slavery. ... Several changes include sidelining Thomas Jefferson, who favored separation of church and state, while introducing a new focus on the 'significant contributions' of pro-slavery Confederate leaders during the Civil War. ... Study of Sir Isaac Newton is dropped in favor of examining scientific advances through military technology."

ISoldat53 writes "The Consumerist has awarded Comcast the Golden Poo award for the worst company in America. From the article: 'After four rounds of bloody battle against some of the most publicly reviled businesses in America, Comcast can now run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and hold its hands high in victory — it has bested everyone else to earn the title of Worst Company In America for 2010.'"

From my experience in the US, when speaking of Calories (with an upper case "C") that refers to kilocalories (with a lower case "c"). The uppercase/lowercase convention is common. (Alternatively, in the US, very few people ever talk about calories - lower case - since when talking about food, pretty much all quantities are in the kcal range)

From my understanding, they did not call up the police station to get an officer to arrest the student. They initially had a Hall Monitor/Security type interacting with the student, and when she would not cooperate, an in-school police officer was called on for further assistance. A minor point, but a difference nonetheless.

The four defendants have run the site since 2004 after it was started in 2003 by the Swedish anti-copyright organization Piratbyrån. The Swedish public service television announced that they are going to send a live audio stream from the trial. It will be broadcast without editing or translation."

A couple things I forgot to mention: 1) IAESTE does international internships for all technical majors (engineering, IT, biology, etc.) 2) IAESTE takes care of a visa, so any company participating thru this would not need to worry about that aspect (also, if you find your own internship, but need help getting a visa, IAESTE can help with that as well). 3) IAESTE also helps with finding housing, social events, etc.
