An anonymous reader writes: In an attempt to modernize Slashdot, Dice has removed everything that made Slashdot unique and worthwhile and has turned it into a generic blog site. User feedback has been unanimously negative, but this is to no avail, and users will have to head elsewhere for insightful and entertaining commentary on tech news.

Frankie70 writes: One of the most enticing "what-ifs" of recent years has come true: Microsoft has purchased Nokia's Devices and Services unit, it announced today. It unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, and gives the company an integrated solution across hardware and software. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay 3.79 billion Euros for Nokia's business, plus another 1.65 billion Euros for its portfolio of patents.

I'd argue that the spirit of 35 USC 101 refers to physical processes, not abstract ones; at most a practical implementation of an abstract algorithm is what is patentable, not the algorithm itself. The Juducial Exceptions explain this further. This was decided by Gottschalk_v._Benson, and seems to have been confirmed by the current case.

supertall writes: Google Glass is sure to prompt a wave of innovative new hands-free applications, but privacy concerns have led to the 5-Point Cafe in Seattle banning the wearable technology. The issues comes down to being photographed/recorded without knowledge or consent. Some people just don't like it, as demonstrated by Steve Mann's assault at a Paris McDonald's. The misuse of such technologies may have deeper implications. Imagine with a single innocuous glance facial recognition technology doing a web search and pulling up someone's personal information such as their home address. Would you be comfortable in a world full of this tech?

I bought an Asus Eee PC 1001PX for a couple hundred bucks mainly as an overseas travel computer. Back up pictures to it, blog, check e-mail, etc. If it gets stolen, no big loss. Currently running Peppermint (Lubuntu variant) on it quite nicely.

Or could it be that the people complaining about Unity doesn't know how to change to to Xubuntu, Kubuntu and so on? A lot of the comments are "Unity is crap" bla bla. I just don't get it, If you don't like Unity, just use Xubuntu or whatever. Unity has been here for over a year now, it's here too stay, just use Xubuntu or whatever if you don't like it.

I imagine many of them have moved on to something else. Doesn't mean they stop griping about the reason they did.
