Voltaire759 writes: The FCC has decided to drop the requirement for Morse code testing for all amateur radio licenses. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) has the announcement as well as the FCC website. From the ARRL article: "The effective date of the FCC's R&O will be 30 days after publication in the Federal Register — most likely in February. Currently, Amateur Radio applicants must pass a 5 WPM Morse code test to operate on HF. The FCC's action will eliminate that requirement all around."

Journal Journal: Day after Christmas is my lucky day!

By virtue of the fact that I am the only sysad not taking that day off, I get to come in at 5am in order to upgrade a number of our SANS with a newer OS. The boss decided that since the network would be down for a bit anyway due to the network team upgrading IOS on the switches and routers, which means all the databases and websites will also be offline, that our team has a perfect oppurtunity to do these long awaited upgrades.

Alan Trick writes: "According to a Gentoo developer, Flameeyes, FAAD2's license is incompatible with the GPL and it's owner (Ahead) doesn't seem to care. FAAD2 uses a modified version of the GPL 2 with an advertising clause. This is not the first time it's been mentioned either. Unbuntu has a bug that can't be fixed because of this licenseing problem and a while ago hydrogenaudio forums had a thread about the license problems.

When Flameeyes emailed Ahead to resolve he recived this canned reponse (from TFA):

Dear valued customer,.

thank you for your email and your interest in our software.

The problem has been checked of our development and legal department. Thanks for the notice. We will consider this in the future. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Since this isn't the first time it's been brought up, Ahead seems to be ignoring their licening problems. Most developers (like gstreamer, mplayer, etc) seem to be ignoring the license."
