Funny, I try to make calls go long when I don't think the rep is being as helpful as they should be. I'll start talking slower, asking open-ended questions, and basically dragging it out and re-asking the question I called about. That's fine, 20 minutes on the phone looks much worse on their back than mine.

Well big whoop. Tell your boss that you really really wanted to get that thing done, but it's really hard to get your brain to agree to "sharing" effort.

I don't really come to Slashdot in order to read sub-Michael Arrington "look at me" content-free posts. What's the moral of the story here, "Pixar still exists?"

From what has been seen of Zuckerberg's ethics, I'd say it's just about even money that this was a completely intentional feature to help get his advertising buddies all that juicy demographic info they pay him so well for.

I think the OP's point was: "there should be a law."

However, the people most agitated by this are too busy reading Slashdot to make a phone call.

You hear all sorts of stories about cops knocking on doors because of loud music or awful smells coming from a house and being nearly killed.

I don't hear these stories, and from my understanding this doesn't happen very often at all, almost to the point of "never." Care to link to some? With it happening "every day," you shouldn't have any trouble finding several just from this year so far, or one from each of the past few days.

But yes, regardless of reality, law enforcement does tend to assume everyone's armed and dangerous. Why this is so is anybody's guess.

The length of production vehicles is easily obtained. It would be no big thing to compile a database for this purpose. Your "difficulty" is completely attributable to laziness.

What is it with RIM supporters and the word, "childish?" Pretty odd for that word to be cropping up so much in this context, and only on one side of the argument.

So given that all of what you describe is just par for the course and to be expected, why doesn't the CEO think he can talk about it? If what you assert was true, he would have been well-placed to educate us all on what you just said. "Hey guys, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but we all sell your text messages to the FBI." Plain and simple, no questions necessary, let's move on to the new models that have hologram stickers on the back.

That's not going to happen because it's not as plain and understood as you assert. He doesn't want to talk about it. Whether it's fear or arrogance or whatever, doesn't matter. We don't get to know, and if we do find out, it ain't gonna be through him.

There's always people who crop up in these scandals, all ready to spout how it's no big deal, at least he didn't RAPE the baby, let's focus on the big picture of how obviously common this is. Nevermind that people are having genuine feelings of surprise, at the very least that their cynicism was rewarded, but that's not enough. Now people aren't even supposed to react. "If you think it can get bad, then don't complain when it does." Do I have that about right? Heck, let's just cut out the middle man and say that the law is defined by how pessimistic someone is. Not all cynicism is accurate observation.

It's simply not an attack if they're real questions. "Hey I don't wanna answer that on account of it'll make me look bad!" Talk about childish.
