Bitcoin Exec To Spend Two Years Behind Bars For Silk Road Transactions 69

mrspoonsi writes Charlie Shrem, former Bitcoin Foundation board member and CEO of the now-defunct exchange BitInstant, has been sentenced to two years in prison for helping Silk Road users anonymously swap cash for digital currency. Silk Road, as you know, was the online marketplace infamous for hosting anonymous drug and gun sales that was busted by the FBI back in 2013. A version 2.0 went up shortly after that, but it suffered the same fate as its predecessor this November. Based on evidence gathered during the crackdown, Shrem agreed to partner with Robert M. Faiella to trade over $1 million in cash from buyers. Faiella was the one with direct contact to buyers, hiding behind the name BTCKing to post ads promoting his dollar-to-Bitcoin business on the marketplace.

Brains are charges and chemistry, but minds are something else, though clearly connected. Brains make minds, we know that. There is no reason to think that anything else can make a mind. There are some philosophers who say that a thermostat has a mind, but that's pretty clearly bullshit. These neural nets are simply primitive and chaotic data filters. Yes, at some point an AI will be able to convince us that it is concious, but there will be no reason to think it is anything but a parlor trick. Until we discover what minds are and how brains make minds, it's all speculation and guesswork.

And Searle doesn't every say, "I can't believe it's just physics." That's just an insult. He says that we don't know the physics of brains, but we know the effects.

These are computer programs, not artificial intelligences as some have come to think of them. They are simply some charges flipping around in some chips. There is no seeing or recognizing in human terms. We apply all that consciousness crap.

In this case, the neural networks are randomly formed nets that match up a few pixels here and there then spit out a result. There is no seeing. Increase the complexity a thousand times over and there will still be no seeing, but there might, might, might be less shitting processing with fewer bizarre results.

As John Searle said, brains make minds.

Everything else is just speculating.

So gender is only DNA? How about genitalia? A person with XY expressing male genitalia is the same sex as a person with XY expressing female genitalia? People with other chromosomal combinations? You have your own poorly-thought-through definitions. That's fine. Just don't impose them. You come across as ignorant.

The Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX probably have the most hacked ECUs around. Loading something like ECUTek onto a BRZ or FR-S gives you equal control. Convenience systems are usually controlled with some kind of aftermarket device, though for Toyotas, you can download Techstream and control a few options via a cheap cable off ebay. A Tesla offers the most toys to play with out of the box, but you can't do a think with the actual drive system. An M-series BMW like an old M5 will give you loads of settings to play with between the engine, transmission, and suspension.

I took a citizens class at the local PD. They said an officer had received many complaints against him. In response, the chief required that he have his radio broadcasting audio during every single interaction he had with the public. The complaints ceased.

This is an awesome idea. Not original at all, of course. I fully support it.
