Red Hat to Enter the Desktop Market 250

head_dunce writes "It looks like Red Hat is going to release their Global Desktop Linux in September and give Ubuntu a challenge for the Linux desktop market. Red Hat Global Desktop 'would be sold with a one-year subscription to security updates.'" It looks like another choice for the proverbial Aunt Tillie. The release is being delayed in order to provide greater media compatibility, "to permit users to view a wide range of video formats on their computers."

leighklotz writes: "HP announced their 35th anniversary version of the groundbreaking HP-35 calculator on July 11th, and the New York Times featured [reg warning] it in their Circuits section today. Sadly, today was also the day that HP apparently withdrew the product to correct reported manufacturing defects. For calculator geeks, note that it has a big prominent ENTER button and reportedly features good tactile feedback. No news about the recall on HP's website..."

jotter507 writes "So, you get arrested for running an illegal online pharmacy and the judge orders you to stop selling medication over the Internet. Don't sit around and do nothing before the trial! Run off to the Dominican Republic on a false passport, withdraw money from an account ordered frozen, and start up another online 'pharmacy.' It didn't end well for 27-year old Christopher William Smith, also known as 'Rizler.' The world-reviled spammer and Internet drug dispenser received a 30-year sentence from a federal judge on Wednesday."

jammag writes: "In this article Signal and Noise in GPLv3, writer Bruce Byfield combines his interviews with Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman and Peter Brown to dispel the media-driven hype about the supposed "civil war" over the new GPL. "Many journalists prefer to report on a conflict than an agreement," Byfield writes.

So even though he quotes Torvalds as saying, about the FSF, "Get the fuck out of my face — your morality is your morality and keep it to yourself," Byfield notes that the differences between the various parties won't ultimately hurt open source. "Real animosities exist, yet they rarely seem to get in the way of co-operation or shared interests," he concludes."

IO ERROR writes "An internet-draft published this month calls for an IPv6 transition plan which would require all Internet-facing servers to have IPv6 connectivity on or before January 1, 2011. 'Engineer and author John Curran proposes that migration to IPv6 happen in three stages. The first stage, which would happen between now and the end of 2008, would be a preparatory stage in which organizations would start to run IPv6 servers, though these servers would not be considered by outside parties as production servers. The second stage, which would take place in 2009 and 2010, would require organizations to offer IPv6 for Internet-facing servers, which could be used as production servers by outside parties. Finally, in the third stage, starting in 2011, IPv6 must be in use by public-facing servers.' Then IPv4 can go away."

A couple, FileCrunch and YouSendit resemble nothing more than online storage with a sharing component. Microsoft's early beta Windows Live Folders is entering the fray, offering a shared folder metaphor, while Tubes is a file-syncing service from mobile platform developer Adesso Systems that keeps files synchronized on the individual sharers' machines. Pando leverages the BitTorrent protocol, but making it private so you can share media with a chosen network of friends and colleagues rather than the whole world. The services all have free levels for file sizes ranging from 50MB to 1GB."

bl8n8r writes: When InfoSec Sellout made wide-mouthed claims of a proof-of-concept worm (Rape.osx) a lot of heated arguments and drama ensued in the Apple community. There have been death threats as well as well as an "accidental" deletion of their blog. There now appears to be a Apple fix in the works to update mDNSresponder to "addresses a vulnerability that can be exploited by an attacker on the local network to gain a denial of service or arbitrary code execution condition."

gerrysteele writes: The authors of mininova have launched a new youtube like video sharing site called http://www.snotr.com/ which one assumes won't quite suffer from the copyright issues of the corporate version. From the FAQ:

Snotr is a source for short and funny or interesting videos. Everyone can submit a video, which will be reviewed by our team. If we accept your video, it will be listed on the front page and other pages.
