My RT-N16 is nice (and with Shibby's mod, I get nice extras like an OpenVPN server & client) but I'd get something with 5 GHz support if you can afford it.
...seriously? You're posting a quote from thirty years ago in the computer industry as if it matters today?
Tomato itself is no longer maintained, but there are several mods out there. I use Shibby's mod for my Asus RT-N16.
Oracle can't figure out how to charge $5000 per CPU per year for Java, so it's not really interested.
Any system newer than 2006 can run Mavericks
My Macbook 2,1 is from June 2007 and it tops out at 10.7.5, not 10.9. The limiting factors are the firmware (32-bit EFI) and the video chip (Intel 945 chipset), both of which are unsupported in 10.8 and newer.
Works with newer Linux, though, so I'm not totally out of luck.

I don't build computers at work - we buy preassembled Dells or Apples - and my last de-novo build at home was in April 2011 not long after Sandy Bridge was released. My i5-2500K chip is fast enough (OC'd to 4.3 GHz on air) that I don't think I'll want an upgrade for a long while yet, and the only minor upgrade that system's received is a newer video card. At some point, budget permitting, I'll switch in an SSD for the boot volume.
