Comment Bad economy: try search engines and schools (Score 2, Insightful) 2

Good luck man. A lot of companies aren't doing internships in this economy. You might want to try the usual haunts (careerbuilder.com has an internship search setting). Depending on how "together" your university is in general that is also generally a good place to check out. Best of luck!

Submission + - What Internships are still Accepting Applications? 2

An anonymous reader writes: As a procrastinating college student who's always reading Slashdot and XKCD, and not focusing on summer internships, it seems I've missed the deadline on most of the summer internship opportunities again this year. So far I've discovered that Google Summer Of Code and NASA Ames Robotics Academy are still accepting applications. Does anyone know of any other internship programs for a Undergraduate Computer Engineering student that are still accepting applications?

Submission + - U.S. House says the Internet is terrorist threat

GayBliss writes: "The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R. 1955) last month, by a vote of 404 to 6, that defines the Internet as a terrorist tool that Congress needs to develop and implement methods to combat. The first 3 "findings" pretty much sums it up:

`The Congress finds the following:

`(1) The development and implementation of methods and processes that can be utilized to prevent violent radicalization, homegrown terrorism, and ideologically based violence in the United States is critical to combating domestic terrorism.

`(2) The promotion of violent radicalization, homegrown terrorism, and ideologically based violence exists in the United States and poses a threat to homeland security.

`(3) The Internet has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens.
The bill now moves to the Senate for a vote. So where do you suppose they are going with this? Should we wait around to find out, or is it time to call your congressman?"

Submission + - Google to develop renewable energy (computerworld.com.au)

inkslinger77 writes: "Google said today it will invest in developing ways to create electricity from renewable energy sources that will be cheaper than the electricity produced from coal. The company is working with two companies on renewable energy technologies: eSolar, a California-based company specializing in solar thermal power that replaces the fuel in a traditional power plant with heat produced from solar energy; and Makani Power, a California-based company developing technologies to harness the wind for energy."

Submission + - Obama to cut NASA budget for education

mknewman writes: MSN is reporting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's education policy is causing a stir ... but not all in a good way. Advocates for space exploration are noting with dismay that he'd take billions of dollars from NASA to pay for the educational programs he'd like to expand.

The shift from exploration to education came last week when Obama talked up his $18 billion education plan during a New Hampshire campaign swing. Actually, the reference to NASA comes at the end of a 15-page document laying out the details behind the plan (PDF file):

"The early education plan will be paid for by delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years, using purchase cards and the negotiating power of the government to reduce costs of standardized procurement, auctioning surplus federal property, and reducing the erroneous payments identified by the Government Accountability Office, and closing the CEO pay deductibility loophole. ..." http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/11/26/481595.aspx

Submission + - Playing Bad Video Games for Charity (desertbus.org)

katicli writes: Desert Bus, the adventure of driving from Tuscan Arizona to Las Vegas real time by Penn and Teller, was designed to be absolutely horrible and painfully realistic. There are no other cars, no scenery aside from the occasional cactus, and no other passengers. Only an occasional slight list of the bus to the right breaks the monotony of the trip (which is approximately 8 hours each way). If the bus is crashed it will be towed back to the city of origin (real time). If the player completes the trip they are awarded a single point and invited to drive back. There is no pause button. Needless to say it exceeded its design goal of complete boringness and was never released. Now the game is back, in its full Sega CD glory, for a second (first?) life as a charity event. Comedy group Loading Ready Run is playing the game to raise money for the Child's Play Charity (founded by Penny Arcade). Four members of the comedy group are playing the game non-stop for a sentence that increases by the amount of money that is donated (currently 104 hours and counting). You can tune into the wonderful adventures of this virtual road trip by a live feed of the video game, a live IRC chat room with the drivers and fans, or a live video of the group playing the game. Residents of Victoria BC invited to stop by for the event and are encouraged to bring snacks. Donations are accepted on the DesertBus.org website.

Submission + - Google and X Prize Sponsor Moon Race (yahoo.com)

katicli writes: "Google and X Space have offered a prize to whoever can successfully get to the moon, land a rover, and beam a gigabyte of data. The rover must drive over a thousand feet. The team who sends the rover is completely responsible for designing and building the rover and lander and procuring their own launch vehicle. The purse is divided as follows: 20 million to whoever can do it before 2012, 5 million for second place, and 5 million for exceeding the minimum requirements. If nobody makes the 2012 deadline the purse drops to 15 million until 2014 when the contest expires. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070913/ap_on_hi_te/google_moon_prize"
