Submission + - Google Black Christmas (googleblackchristmas.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Just a little note from the UK side of the pond to wish you all a merry festive season, As usual we've made a little thing:

Google Blacklist Christmas allows you to create a message to your loved ones constructed from all the words that google deems unsuitable for consumption. Unsurprisingly they are nearly all quite rude.

You're all very welcome.

All our Love.

Submission + - Kinect is officially coming to PC (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: The company explains that there are currently “many” developers applying to Microsoft for the ability to use the system, so Divine Souls won’t be the only one – it seems the hardware will be supported “like joy pad mode”.

Submission + - Humble Bundle II (humblebundle.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Humble Bundle 2 is available to all. Like the first, customer-determined value is the guiding economic premise, and primary marketing hook. How much is Braid, Cortex Command, Machinarium, Osmos, and Revenge of the Titans worth to you? And will they break a meelyun bux, again?

Comment Glad I don't have Comcast (Score 1) 434

Now, I'm not exactly glad I have the ISP that I do, but anything seems better than Comcast after everything I've heard about and from them over the years.

I won't do business with Charter because I don't like how they've done business in the past. I can't get a wireless provider because I live in a small dead spot. I'm stuck with AT&T DSL and I get terrible speeds because of a similar dead spot.

I live, it seems, in the middle of a circle. This circle is made up entirely of residential homes and apparently companies either don't want to, or are being denied the opportunity to install a cell tower, phone switch, or anything of the sort closer to my home.

Basically, this all means that the only ISP that can possibly get me decent speeds is a company I won't do business with on principle. I'm sure if it came down to it and Comcast was the only provider I had available to me I'd seriously consider satellite.

Submission + - EPA Knowingly Allowed Pesticide that Kills Bees (fastcompany.com)

hether writes: The mystery of the disappearing bees has been baffling scientists for years and now we get another big piece in the puzzle. From Fast Company — "A number of theories have popped up as to why the North American honey bee population has declined--electromagnetic radiation, malnutrition, and climate change have all been pinpointed. Now a leaked EPA document reveals that the agency allowed the widespread use of a bee-toxic pesticide, despite warnings from EPA scientists." Now environmentalists and bee keepers are calling for an immediate ban of pesticide clothianidin, sold by Bayer Crop Science under the brand name Poncho.

Submission + - Iron-Eating Bug Is Gobbling Up the Titanic (aolnews.com)

gambit3 writes: A newly discovered microbe dubbed Halomonas titanicae is chewing its way through the wreck of the famous ship and leaving little behind except a fine dust, researchers report in today's issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. "In 1995, I was predicting that Titanic had another 30 years," said Henrietta Mann, a civil engineering adjunct professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. "It's deteriorating much faster than that now."

Submission + - Doubling of CO2 not so tragic after all? (theregister.co.uk) 4

carvalhao writes: The Register reports on a study from NASA and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that claims that new climate models that account for the effects of increased CO2 levels on plant growth result on a 1,64 C increase for a doubling of CO2 concentrations, a far less gloomy scenario than previously considered.

Submission + - Self-healing Autonomous Material Comes to Life 1

An anonymous reader writes: You've seen it in movies: the human-like, robot assassin quickly regenerates its structure after being damaged beyond recognition. This "Terminator" scenario is becoming less far-fetched as recent advances in structural health monitoring systems have led to a variety of ways to identify damage to a structural system. Now, in the Journal of Applied Physics, researchers at Arizona State University have created a material that may be able to not only sense damage in structural materials, such as cracking in a fiber-reinforced composite, but to even heal it. The aim of developing "autonomous adaptive structures" is to mimic the ability of biological systems such as bone to sense the presence of damage, halt its progression, and regenerate itself.

Reason 1: Freezing it in ROM will prevent customization of any kind. If customization can be loaded after the OS loads from ROM then malware can be loaded.

Reason 2: Freezing it in hardware ROM will be expensive. Freezing it in a software psudo-ROM is insecure because it can still be written to via exploits.

Reason 3: Nothing is secure. NOTHING. If it is connected to a network or accepts any data from any outside sources, or even accepts any users besides yourself, it is insecure. Personally, I'd rather live with more potential vulnerabilities than lose the ability to customize my OS.

Submission + - Is This An Earthquake? (isthisanearthquake.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Chrome, Firefox, Safari Mobile now grants access to accelerometer data via Javascript. Check it out by visiting this (non-scientific) earthquake detecting website from any iDevice, MacBook or other accelerometer equipped device.

Submission + - Pac-Man's Ghost Behavior Algorithms (gameinternals.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: A very interesting description of the algorithms behind the ghosts in Pac-Man. I had no idea about most of this information, but that's probably because it's difficult to study the ghosts when I die every 30 seconds.
