Submission + - Online gamers bypass Internet with private network (networkworld.com)

jbrodkin writes: "Amidst all the political and moral rants against video games, sometimes it's easy to forget about the real victims of video game violence: the people with slow Internet connections who just can't shoot their virtual machine guns fast enough. A Missouri startup called GameRail feels the pain of latency-challenged online video gamers, and has developed a private network that routes game traffic from PCs to about 10,000 servers hosted by online gaming companies. Essentially, it allows online gamers to bypass the Internet, the company claims. For players of first-person shooter games, GameRail's target market, "the higher the latency the slower the bullets and you can't dodge out of the way," says John Alden, vice president of business development. "With lower latency, you can shoot better, faster, and react faster." GameRail is initially focusing on first-person shooters because the quality of those games is heavily dependent on latency, Alden says. Latency matters less in fantasy role-playing games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft. GameRail serves PC players exclusively for now, but Alden says the company's plans include developing peer-to-peer connections between Xbox Live players for "LAN-like connectivity.""

Submission + - Post SMS messages on a Website?

lazukars writes: "I am developing a website with Ruby that will integrate SMS messaging. Let's say the site is called http://www.example.com/ for clarity sake. The primary function of example.com will be accepting incoming sms messages and then posting these messages to a page on the site. So, let's say Jane Doe texts, "This is cool", to some number, ultimately "This is cool" will post to a page on www.example.com. The only stipulation that example.com needs is that it will have to handle a large amount of sms messages

Doing some research over the last few days it seems like only viable way to pull this off is by accessing a SMS gateway. I just want to make sure that accessing a SMS gateway is the best alternative before starting a project that will take awhile to complete.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated."

Submission + - Going to Yosemite? Get your passport ready! (cnn.com)

rev_media writes: The Real ID acts mandates all states to begin issuing federal IDs to all citizens by 2008. Costs could be as much at $14 billion, but only 40 million are currently allocated. Several states have passed legislation expressly forbidding participation in the program, while others seem to be all for it. The IDs will be required for access to all federal areas including flights, state parks and federal buildings. People in states refusing to comply will need to show passports even for domestic flights.
