Submission + - Proposed Amendment Would Ban All DVD Copying (pcmag.com)

akkarin writes: PcMag has an interesting yet worrying article about a proposed amendment, which, if passed, would ban all DVD copying — yes, even 'backups'. From the article:

The proposed amendment was made public in a letter sent by Michael Malcolm, the chief executive of Kaleidescape, a DVD jukebox company which successfully defeated a suit by the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA) this past March. The proposed amendment is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, according to Malcolm.

Is this the end of legal DVD backups?

Submission + - InkJet Printers lying, or mistaken? (arstechnica.com)

akkarin writes: An interesting 'study' (how scientific, I wonder?), is calling InkJet Printers "filthy, lying thieves".
They claim that even the most advanced printers misinform their users of their ink levels, which is wasting 100s of pages worth of ink. From the article:

A new study says that on average, more than half of the ink from inkjet cartridges is wasted when users toss them in the garbage. Why is that interesting? According to the study, users are tossing the cartridges when their printers are telling them they're out of ink, not when they necessarily are out of ink.
Hype, or truth? http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070618-stud y-inkjet-printers-are-filthy-lying-thieves.html

Patents

Submission + - Ubuntu, Red Hat reject Microsoft patent deal (zdnet.com.au)

akkarin writes: Both Ubuntu and Red Hat have rejected Microsoft's deal regarding patents. http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Ubuntu-R ed-Hat-reject-Microsoft-patent-deal/0,130061733,33 9278741,00.htm From the article:

Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical's CEO, said in a blog posting on Saturday, that Canonical has declined to talk to Microsoft about any agreement that provides legal protection to Ubuntu users related to "unspecified patents". ... Shuttleworth said these patent agreements create "a false sense of security" and do not effectively protect the user from a patent suit from a big company like Microsoft.
How much longer will Microsoft attempt to bully OSS organisations into bowing down to their invisible patents?
